China
October 1, 1949
The ancient culture of China has its most recent incarnation popularly set for the communist takeover declared on October 1, 1949. Today's political astrologers generally use the 3:15 pm time given by Charles Carter. However, recent translations of videos of the declaration indicate that a 3:01 pm birth time is historically accurate. And it works in practice.
After some review of China's history, it seems that a 3:00 pm time works better, which was the moment Mao began his independence announcement, rather than when he finished. Checking on key progressions to and from the Midheaven helps verify 3:00 pm. For example, China conducted its first nuclear bomb test on October 16, 1964 when progressed Mars was squaring the Scorpio Midheaven (orb 0º20').
Nixon "opened China" by his state visit that began on February 21, 1972 as the progressed Midheaven was sextile progressed Neptune in Libra, the sign of diplomacy (orb 0º11'). Mao (the beloved leader) died on September 9, 1976 as the progressed Midheaven and Venus were exactly conjunct (orb 0º02'). The Tiananmen Square incident on June 4, 1989 took place as the progressed Midheaven and progressed Moon opposed each other (orb 0º01'), while aligned with natal Uranus.

From this starting point, we can tell how upset China's leadership is over the Dalai Lama's visit to Washington this coming February 17-18 (2010). The current reactionary, fear-inducing square
between Saturn and Pluto is hitting China's Uranus, the ruler of its revolutionary Aquarius Ascendant. Also, transiting Mars will be exactly opposite China's Moon, an exceptionally irritable combination. Watch for some diplomatic backlash when Mars turns direct right on China's Descendant on March 9.
China and the Dalai Lama

NewsScope; Februrary 8, 2010. Last week the Obama administration announced that it would welcome the Dalai Lama for a visit to the White House, in spite of China's protests that the religious leader is pushing for Tibetan independence. U.S.-China relations have deteriorated recently over internet censorship, a U.S. arms deal to Taiwan, and monetary policies. China's horoscope is traditionally set for 3:15 pm (October 1, 1949; Beijing).

Liu Xiaobo and Eris

China's horoscope (October 1, 1949; 3:00 pm; Beijing) reveals another nation strongly shaped by Eris. China's Libra Sun is in a close opposition to Eris (orb 0º51'), giving its leadership (Sun) an intense awareness of troublemakers (Eris), those who would upset the Libran need for harmony. The problem for China is that the Sun also squares Uranus, which quite naturally opens the door to radical social change.

When Liu Xiaobo (December 28, 1955; Changchun; time unknown) won the Nobel Peace Prize last week, transiting Saturn was right on China's Sun, and naturally the leaders responded in an authoritarian way by censoring all news about the jailed dissident. Liu's Capricorn Sun fits right into China's T-Square (Sun-Uranus-Eris), so that he personally activates all China's phobias, even though Liu has long advocated moderation and compromise.
Astrologers traditionally use a 3:15 birth time for China, but a 3:00 pm birth time seems to work better*. Liu Xiaobo's Uranus at 1º Leo represents his imperial sense of human rights, one that helped him forge Charter 08 - a
human rights manifesto. Liu's Uranus happens to sit exactly on China's Descendant, so that he exemplifies radical dissent against the status quo.

Over the next two weeks, China's progressed Moon at 21º Aries will conjoin transiting Eris, marking an interval when we can expect much fallout from this event. However, China's progressed Jupiter is emerging from the 12th house, where it's been ever since 1949. Over the next few years, China's progressed Jupiter in Aquarius will arrive on China's Ascendant, when human rights and individual freedoms will certainly find expression, and perhaps redefine China's national image.
Regarding the video evidence, the following is excerpted from Dutch astrologer Joyce Hoen's China page at

who in turn quotes Van Kevin Golay:

< This information for this chart was taken from video tape of the ceremony and accounts in Xinhua yuebao and Xinhua newspapers. [Oct. 1, 2, 3, 1949 Beijing]. As interpreted by Guanghui Zhou a Chinese student at the Hoover Institute, U.C., Stanford, California. The sequence of events goes like this:

The celebration begins precisely at 3:00 p.m. and ended at 9:25 p.m. The main events of the celebration were the proclamation of the founding of the Peoples Republic of China by newly elected Chairman Mao Zedung. This was followed by the first ever rising of the newly designed national flag in Tiananmen Square. The flag was raised at the touch of a button by Mao which automatically raised the flag by remote control. These dramatic simultaneous events symbolize and mark the ascendant. The rest of the day was filled with a military parade which lasted about 3 hours and the peoples parades took the rest of the time. Finally there were fireworks at the end.

a. At 3:00 p.m. Chairman (Mao Zedong), vice chairmen, and other members of the central government take their seats on top The Gate of Heavenly Peace facing Tiananmen Square.

b. Lin Boqu secretary of the Central Government announces the beginning and order of events of the celebration. The national song was played. This took about 1 minute ( the national song takes about 48 seconds).

c. Mao’s proclamation lasted for about 18 seconds, and the applause’s last about 18 seconds. So Mao most likely began his talk at 3:01 p.m. and finished his proclamation at between 3:01:20 and 3:01:36 p.m. (after this, 54 ceremonial cannon fired 28 times and the national song was played again when Mao was raising the national flag. The exact information for this is that the process lasted for about 2 minutes and 5 seconds.)

Then Zhu De, Commander of the Peoples Liberation Army ordered that the military show begin (lasts about 3 hours). This was followed by the marches of the Peoples groups. >
China's New Horoscope

NewsScope; January 10, 2011. With China's president Hu Jintao scheduled to visit Washington next week, it's time to look into China's new horoscope. For the past year, this column has urged the use of a 3:00 pm birth time for China rather than the traditional 3:15 pm accepted by most "mundane" astrologers. Recently, translated video evidence* of Mao's declaration of independence indicates that 3:01 or possibly 3:02 pm would be more accurate.

Using 3:01 pm, what's most interesting about this horoscope are the indicators for growth, both as an economic and military superpower. When Nixon "opened" China in 1972, the communist-led country began edging toward state-controlled capitalism. Progressed Venus and the progressed Midheaven have been in a long-term conjunction, advancing at about the same rate of one degree/year. Ever since they entered business-oriented Capricorn in 1986, China's economic growth has exceeded all expectations.

In the mean time, China's Jupiter has urged a more expansionist worldview. Natally, Jupiter in the 12th house and in Capricorn suggests a behind-the-scenes elite. Jupiter sextile the Midheaven might describe a ruling class guiding China's destiny with a sense of ancient Confucianism. By secondary progression, Jupiter entered Aquarius last year, and will be conjunct the Ascendant in a few years.

This combination points to China's growing image as a superpower, and optimistically networking around the world. In 2017, China's progressed Midheaven, Venus and Jupiter will all be conjunct right on its Aquarius Ascendant. We can be sure that this extremely favorable alliance of the benefics with China's angles will keep it prosperous, outgoing, and interested in shaping the geopolitical landscape with its newfound strength.

Hou Yifan, Chess Prodigy

NewsScope; January 17, 2011. The Women's World Chess Championship was held last month in Turkey, and to the surprise of most everyone, Hou Yifan from China won the competition, becoming the youngest women's world chess champion in history. As New York Times columnist Nicholas Kristof writes, the teen prodigy is a result of China's heavy investment in education and human capital, especially in young women.

Hou Yifan was born with a Sun-Saturn conjunction in Pisces (February 27, 1994; Xinghua, Taizhou, China; time unknown), giving her plenty of imagination and ambition. This combination is enhanced by a trine to Jupiter, so that she has much encouragement for her passion for chess. Her Mercury, describing the way she processes information, is exalted in Aquarius, given a warrior's strength and courage by the conjunction with Mars, and much intensified by the square to Pluto.
Hou Yifan's favorite chess player is Bobby Fischer (March 9, 1943; 2:39 pm; Chicago, IL), who also has a Pisces Sun trine Jupiter to bring him success. Fischer's Mercury is likewise in Aquarius, and he has a similar Mars-Pluto aspect (an opposition) that fostered a relentless drive to win. Fischer's Taurus Moon squaring his Mars-Pluto polarity eventually drove him toward paranoia and bizarre behavior.

Fortunately for Hou Yifan, her Virgo Moon favorably trines a Uranus-Neptune conjunction, which indicates a calmer, even serene emotional life. She won the Women's World Championship on December 25, 2010 as the transiting Jupiter-Uranus conjunction landed on her progressed Sun in Pisces. One can anticipate much success over the next three years as her progressed Sun goes on to trine her Pluto.
