Alibaba, the Biggest IPO Ever
NewsScope, September 22, 2014; In just its first ten minutes of trading as a public company, 100 million shares of Alibaba (BABA) were bought, lifting the offering price some 35%. Alibaba is China’s largest e-commerce company, but most of its shares are owned by American investors. The first trade took place at 11:53 am, which establishes its First Trade horoscope (September 19, 2014; New York, NY).
As was demonstrated last week (see below), 27º of any sign is a power point when it comes to successful stocks. BABA’s Ascendant at 27º Scorpio puts it in this category, especially since the Virgo Sun is sextile the Ascendant. BABA’s powerful financial position can be seen in Pluto’s placement, since it’s the ruler of the chart: Pluto is found in the 2nd house of financial assets and forms a close trine to the Midheaven.
BABA’s formidable position is also indicated by Mars near the Ascendant, where it’s enhanced by a trine to the Leo Moon. Venus, the natural ruler of money, is located in the tenth house and is supported by a sextile to Saturn. Investors know that BABA controls 80% of the Chinese e-commerce market and its profit margin is over 40%. These phenomenal numbers fit the planetary placements.
A problem can be seen in Saturn’s location in the 12th house. Saturn is associated with Alibaba’s governance, which is unusually complex and secretive. Saturn forms a square to Black Moon Lilith, representing potential complications from unseen quarters. Analysts suspect that the Chinese government could intervene in a way that undermines BABA’s corporate model. In any case, over the coming year, as BABA’s progressed Sun completes its sextile to the Ascendant, BABA should gain prestige and be a stellar performer.
Nasdaq Top Ten List
NewsScope; Sept. 15, 2014; Last week a Marketwatch article listing Nasdaq’s top ten gainers in 2014 caught the attention of many financial analysts. Michael Munkasey’s Company Database has First Trade charts for five of these. Without exception, each one has close ties to the U.S. Scorpio Rising horoscope, which sets the stock up to become a national success story. Then the progressions and transits activate the underlying potential.
BioFuel (BIOF) was the number-one top gainer, up over 500% year-to-date. BIOF began trading (June 14, 2007; 10:40 am; New York, NY) when 27º Leo was on the Ascendant and empowered by a trine from Pluto at 27º Sagittarius. Mars in Aries energizes the Ascendant-Pluto trine. This year, progressed Mars arrived at 27º Aries, completing a Grand Trine, and also the connection to the U.S. Pluto at 27º Capricorn.
RadNet (RDNT) began trading when the Sun was at 25º Aquarius (February 14, 2007; 9:30 am; New York, NY), which conjoins the U.S. Moon at 25º Aquarius. RDNT’s elevated Moon at 14º Capricorn aligns with the U.S. Saturn at 14º Libra. This year’s transiting Uranus-Pluto square hit RDNT’s well aspected Moon, and it became a hit within the health industry, up over 300% year-to-date.
InterceptPharmaceuticals (ICPT, October 11, 2012; 10:45 am; New York, NY) also has an alignment with the U.S. Pluto: its Moon at 27º Leo squares the North Node at 27º Scorpio. ICPT’s Mercury at 8º Scorpio conjoins the U.S. Scorpio Ascendant, with both being activated by the April 28 Solar Eclipse. ICPT announced (Mercury) its successful trial of a new drug, and the stock has been up over 300% year-to-date.
Comcast’s Evil Empire
NewsScope; Feb. 17, 2014; Last week Comcast announced plans to buy Time Warner Cable for $45 billion. The deal, if it clears regulatory hurdles, would expand the world’s largest mass media and communications conglomerate into a colossus that would potentially disrupt network neutrality for its own gain. Comcast’s IPO on June 29, 1972* (10:00 am; New York, NY) sets the stage for its dominance in global media.
Ceres near the Virgo Ascendant describes Comcast as a service-oriented industry, in the business of providing entertainment, information, and telecommunications to consumers. Its predatory instinct can be seen in the Cancer Sun’s square to Pluto, which is expanded by the Sun’s opposition to Jupiter. An Air Grand Trine -- connecting the Moon, Uranus, and Venus-Saturn -- facilitates Comcast’s business model of focusing on mass media.
Pluto trines the Taurus Midheaven from the 2nd house, which provides the financial means to achieve total control. Note that the Midheaven at 26º Taurus is exactly conjunct the malevolent star Algol, which has earned Comcast the worst customer satisfaction rating in the country, even worse than the IRS. And some would say that Algol in this prominent position accounts for Comcast’s evil corporate nature.
Comcast completed a huge merger with ATT Cable on November 18, 2002, when its progressed Ascendant was trine the Midheaven and the progressed Sun was sextile Juno, the partnership asteroid. The deal took three years to clear FCC oversight, a process that unfolded as transiting Pluto opposed Comcast’s Saturn.
For the current Time Warner deal, we can expect a similar round of debate and anti-monopoly talk, as transiting Pluto is once again forming a hard aspect (the quincunx) to Saturn. And of course the transiting Uranus-Pluto square is aligning with Comcast’s Uranus. But with Comcast’s progressed Ascendant conjoining natal Juno over the coming two years, it will likely be approved.
* First Trade data is according to the company’s website (http://www.cmcsa.com/faq.cfm), “Comcast's Initial Public Offering (IPO) was on June 29, 1972. On that date, 430,000 shares of CMCSA were issued at $7 per share.”
This IPO date is in conflict with the July 7, 1972 date given by Bill Meridian In his book Planetary Stock Trading. Financial astrologers would be well advised to research Nasdaq’s IPO pages, price charts, and company websites to get accurate First Trade data.
Jack Ma’s
Alibaba is Coming
NewsScope; Sept. 1, 2014; Jupiter-Uranus aspects are renowned for promoting new technologies, scientific breakthroughs, and progressive changes. The trine between these two planets that takes place in creative Leo and
Jack Ma was born with his Libra Sun trine Saturn in the networking sign of Aquarius (October 15, 1964; Hangzhou, China; time unknown), a combination that bestows maturity, reliability, and a need to create order and structure. His Sun conjoins the first magnitude star Spica, which represents the Goddess’s gift of new knowledge and adds the potential of brilliance to the personality. Ma’s Sun also sextiles Mars in Leo, giving him confidence and a regal bearing.
The revolutionary Uranus-Pluto conjunction of the mid-1960s conjoins his Venus and squares the asteroid Pallas, both of which are people-oriented placements, like his Aquarius Moon and Libra Sun. Pallas is associated with creative intelligence and computer networking, and given a transpersonal push by the tight squares to Uranus and Pluto. In 1995, Ma founded China’s first internet company, ChinaPages.com.
True to his Libra Sun, Ma increased his personal wealth and prestige by making deals, most notably with Yahoo, which owns a 23% stake in Alibaba. Currently, transiting Pluto is trine Ma’s Venus, a surefire indicator of wealth creation. Also, he’s experiencing a progressed New Moon right on his Pallas, describing the new start concerning his networking business. Of course, the transiting Jupiter-Uranus trine lands right on his Mars in Leo, making him the entrepreneurial king of our times.
pioneering Aries on September 25 is already shaping up. Among the expected developments, Alibaba (China’s e-commerce giant) will launch its IPO in late September, and secure CEO Jack Ma’s place as the richest man in China.
Howard Schultz, Coffee King
NewsScope; June 23, 2014; Last week Howard Schultz, the CEO of Starbucks, kicked off his company’s College Achievement Plan* in partnership with Arizona State University, which will provide full tuition reimbursement for any of its 135,000 employees. The generous plan follows Congress’s inability to back a student loan refinance program, and is only the latest example of Schultz’s leadership role as a pioneering, responsible corporate citizen.
With his Cancer Sun energized by a conjunction with Mars and Uranus (July 19, 1953; Brooklyn, NY; time unknown), Schultz has the competitive drive to achieve success in the business world. This triple conjunction helped him excel at sports and brought him an athletic scholarship to college. Later, he bought the Seattle Supersonics and then sold them to an Oklahoma City ownership group. The team relocated and became the Oklahoma City Thunder.
Schultz’s Sun squares a Saturn-Neptune conjunction, a combination that attempts to bring his vision (Neptune) into the manifest world (Saturn). It’s a constant, life-long struggle that would turn many into embittered, hardened souls. But Schultz has some astrological helpers, including a generous Venus-Jupiter conjunction. This lucky pairing falls in Gemini, giving him a fondness for communicating his message: to build a company with values, guiding principles, and culture.
Schultz’s Cancer Sun is also sextile to Black Moon Lilith, giving him full access to the seamy side of life, and a conscious desire to improve conditions. Starbucks was the first company in America to offer comprehensive health insurance and employee-ownership in the form of stock options. With transiting Jupiter heading into a conjunction with his Sun over the next two weeks, he’s bound to get plenty of recognition and honors. He may even get some praise from his Seattle neighbors who are still peeved that he sold the Supersonics to Oklahoma.
Henry Waxman vs. Big Pharma
NewsScope; March 31, 2014; In 2005, Congressman Henry Waxman (D. CA) revealed how Merck paid doctors to present a
Henry Waxman was born with his Virgo Sun conjunct Neptune, the natural ruler of pharmaceuticals (September 12, 1939; 3:15 am; Los Angeles, CA). The Virgo Sun forms an Earth Grand Trine, connecting Uranus in fiscally conservative Taurus (at the Midheaven), and a forthright Mars in Capricorn. This practical, self-sufficient configuration has made him one of the most enduring, influential liberal politicians in Washington.
Virgo’s natural inclination toward analysis becomes heated criticism in Waxman’s chart since his Mars is under heavy pressure from its square to Saturn and opposition to Pluto. The Mars-Saturn-Pluto T-Square provides intense determination and will power, and often gets involved in exhausting power struggles. When he was investigating Merck in 2004-2005, transiting Saturn was in his 12th house and conjoining his natal Pluto, as he showcased how pharmaceutical companies pay doctors to prescribe their drugs. Also, transiting Pluto squaring his Sun-Neptune conjunction indicates power struggles with Big Pharma.
Currently, Waxman’s progressed Moon is in his tenth house and conjoining Uranus as he made one more push against Big Pharma. Last week, when transiting Mars was squaring Waxman’s natal Mars, he made a direct attack on Sovaldi as a political act meant to shame Gilead (the manufacturer of Sovaldi) and other drug-makers. The biotech industry as a whole panicked at this public spanking, and the sector fell 10% in a few days.
Waxman will retire in 2016, but with his progressed Mars opposite his Moon, he won’t be going quietly. As a principle architect of Obamacare, he pushed to have transparency about the financial arrangements made between drug companies and doctors. This coming September, the federal government will release details on these payments. Then you’ll know if your doctor is prescribing drugs because they’re good for you, or because he has a financial incentive to do so.
distorted view of Vioxx, a best-selling prescription drug with known lethal side effects. Vioxx was pulled from the market, and Waxman became known as Big Pharma’s biggest enemy. Last week Waxman questioned the $84,000 price tag of Sovaldi, which analysts project will become the best-selling drug of all time.
