North Korea
Horoscopes and astrological commentary on North Korea and it's eccentric leader, Kim Jong Un.
North Korea Goes Nuclear
NewsScope; February 14, 2005. Last Thursday North Korea issued a statement that it had "manufactured nukes for self-defense to cope with the Bush administration's undisguised policy to isolate and stifle" it. Political observers disagreed whether to push for more diplomatic efforts, or to begin looking at economic sanctions, or even military options. The announcement pre-empted a Chinese effort to get North Korea back to the negotiating table.
North Korea's national horoscope (September 10, 1948; 8:50 pm; Pyongyang *) features a prominent Mars in Scorpio on its seventh house of open enemies. This Mars is very near the U.S. Scorpio Ascendant, so that North Korea naturally views the U.S. as a life-threatening enemy. Over the last month American diplomats reported that North Korea was ready to re-start talks as transiting Uranus formed a favorable trine to this Mars.
However, Uranus often leads to sudden changes of direction. The surprise announcement arrived as the Moon and Uranus were conjunct each other and forming an exact sextile to North Korea's Ascendant. From another angle, NK's Mercury-Neptune conjunction in Libra may be associated with diplomatic efforts. Last week the progressed Moon was exactly squaring this planetary pair.
Meanwhile, transiting Saturn is nearing the IC, the fourth house cusp, where it

notes: This chart's time is rectified, based on reports of a proclamation "at night". Mars on the Descendant describes the formation of a northern government that aggressively assumed control over the entire Korean peninsula. This set up the Korean War which began as progressed Mars hit the Descendant.
creates immense security concerns. Saturn turns direct on March 22 while nearly exactly conjunct the IC and inconjunct (quincunx) beneficial Jupiter. North Korea's eighth house Jupiter represents a financial benefactor which traditionally has been played out by China. Watch over the next two months as transiting Saturn links up to Jupiter for the Chinese-North Korean relationship to come under historic pressure.
Regarding the date and approximate time of North Korea's formation, Nicholas Campion (in Book of World Horo- scopes) writes: "The Communist Peoples Democratic Republic of Korea was given independence on 9/10/1948 following three years of occupation. Press reports on 11 September referred to the proclamation of the republic 'yesterday' but spoke of radio announce- ments that a cabinet had been appointed and that the northern government was the sole government of Korea 'last night.' Whether this means that the proclamation was made in the evening, or merely that the only relevant news broadcasts monitored were those made in the evening is not clear. ...The position is complicated by the fact that different dates, such as 9 September and 12 September, are given for independence. However it is clear that while the proclamation was made on 10 September, we have absolutely no indication of the time of day."
North Korea Joins Nuclear Club
NewsScope; October 16, 2006. North Korea's detonation of its first nuclear bomb last Tuesday set the international community into a frenzied debate about how to deal with this rogue nation. South Korea and China were divided about how to proceed, while Japan and the U.S. favored immediate and severe sanctions, plus a military blockade. Meanwhile, American analysts feared that North Korea might sell its nuclear technology to Al Qaeda.
North Korea's national horoscope (September 10, 1948; 9:50 pm; Pyongyang) shows clear signs of these latest developments. On the day of the nuclear test (October 9), transiting Mars and the new dwarf planet Eris were in an exact opposition, and this polarity formed an exact square to the NK Midheaven. The militant Mars archetype combined with Eris, the troublemaker, to upset and confuse the entire international community.
The observant astrologer will note a number of additional transits with very tight orbs* all of which underscore the significance of this event and validate the accuracy of this North Korean horoscope. The situation is even more explicit when considering progressed aspects. The powerful nuclear self-assertion is clearly defined by progressed Mars precisely trine Pluto (orb 0º02').
Undoubtedly, President Kim Jong Il will continue to act in defiant and unpredictable ways. This is evident by North Korea's progressed Sun (leadership) heading into a trioctile with Uranus (orb 0º13') and square with Pluto, which will be exact in six months. Kim Jong Il's horoscope repeats this message, since his progressed Sun and Mercury are also squaring his Pluto. No matter how you look at it, this global sector promises to be a major hotspot over the next few years.

transiting Jupiter conjunct Chiron (orb 0º43')
transiting Jupiter sextile the MC (orb 0º53')
Kim Jong-un, the Morning Star King
NewsScope, Nov. 29, 2010; North Korea watchers believe that last week's bizarre attack was largely due to internal developments. Kim Jong-un (Kim Jong-il's youngest son) is being groomed to take over and is learning to work with the military regime. North Korea recently changed Kim Jong-un's official birthday from January 8, 1983 to January 8, 1982, but the birth year is most likely 1984.*
Kim Jong-un's mother fondly called him the Morning Star King, and of the possible birth years, only in 1984 was Venus the morning star. Perhaps she saw that Venus was exceptionally placed by being conjunct Antares, the bright red star associated with military leadership. A speculative birth time of 7:00 am (Pyongyang) places the serious Capricorn Sun just below the horizon and Mercury on his protocol-oriented Capricorn Ascendant.
Kim Jong'un's spectacular rise began on January 15, 2009 when South Korea reported that his father named him as his successor. At the time, transiting Pluto and progressed Jupiter were right on his Mercury-Ascendant, bringing him out of the shadows for this important new role. He was also experiencing a progressed New Moon squaring natal Saturn in the tenth house, kicking off a 28-year cycle emphasizing his inherited authority.
A Mars-Pluto conjunction in the tenth house further accentuates his collaboration with the military. On September 27, 2010, when Kim Jong-un was magically made into a four-star general, transiting Uranus was quincunx (150º) his Mars. Last week's events took place as transiting Venus turned direct on Kim Jong-un's Mars. A good bet is that he will assume power in 2012, perhaps on his birthday when transiting Saturn is conjunct his elevated Mars.
Kim Jong-Un Takes Charge
NewsScope, December 26, 2011; Regular readers of NewsScope were not surprised when North Korea’s regime began consolidating around heir apparent Kim Jong-un this week. From the November 29, 2010 column: “A good bet is that he will assume power in 2012, perhaps on his birthday when transiting Saturn is conjunct his elevated Mars.” Based on this accurate forecast (off by only three weeks), we have confirmation of his birth date and time.
* The young leader’s birth year is uncertain, as is his birth time. The astrological rationale for using the stated birth data was explained in NewsScope's Nov. 29, 2010 column, attached below.
Kim Jong-un was born with his Sun in duty-conscious Capricorn (January 8, 1984; 7:00 am;* Pyong-yang, NK). A retrograde Mercury is also in Capricorn, and rests on the Capricorn Ascendant. This combination describes a reclusive personality, one that is shaped by imaginative, strategic thinking. Jupiter and Neptune conjoin his Mercury, creating a mythological, royal veil around the real person, making him a receptive symbol of the regime’s power.
Kim’s father, the “Dear Leader”, died unexpectedly within a week of when Uranus turned direct in Aries. This Uranus station squares Kim Jong-un’s Ascendant-Mercury configuration, suddenly thrusting him into his pre-determined role. The youth’ 10th house of earthly power is dominated by a Mars-Pluto conjunction, suggesting the important alliance (Mars is in Libra) with the regime’s military.
The process of securing control over North Korea’s political, social and military dynamics will take several years to unfold, but transiting Saturn hovering over his Mars now is a solid start. However, in two years transiting Uranus and Pluto will begin aligning with his Capricorn Sun, which predictably, will usher in his most severe challenges. In contrast, the CIA admitted last week that “North Korea is an extraordinarily hard intelligence target”. Perhaps they should consult an astrologer.
NewsScope, March 11, 2013; All the menacing diplomatic tactics coming out of North Korea during Kim Jong Il’s 17-year reign have been re-introduced over the past year by his son and successor, Kim Jong Un. Last week the hostile tempo quickened when North Korea threatened to launch a pre-emptive nuclear attack on the United States, although it doesn’t yet possess the missile technology to accomplish this invasion.
Kim Jong Un’s Saturn Return
With a Mars-Pluto conjunction in his 10th house of career, Kim Jong Un’s horoscope (January 8, 1984; 7:00 am; Pyong-yang, NK) reveals a hot-tempered tough guy who has to prove that he’s no pushover. As a Capricorn going through his first Saturn Return, Kim is attempting to establish control over his own destiny and secure his place at the top of North Korea’s military establishment.
His progressed Moon entered Aries on February 8, 2013, which is a reliable indicator for increased aggression. Only four days later, North Korea conducted a nuclear test that demonstrated improving technology and severely undermined regional stability. Currently, Kim’s progressed Moon is squaring his Mercury, which in turn, is sextile his Mars-Pluto conjunction. This accounts for the antagonistic rhetoric, but is it a real threat?
The ruler of Kim’s Midheaven (signifying his international status) is Venus, and it’s conjunction with Uranus in the 12th house points to a personality that feels naturally isolated. And this Venus-Uranus pair squares his Pisces Moon, a configuration which refers to emotional rejection and feelings of abandonment. This psychologically disturbed personality closely mirrors the status of North Korea. The transiting Uranus-Pluto square is heading for Kim’s Sun over the next few years, which promises that he will continue to be extremely provocative.
Making accurate predictions begins with having accurate horoscopes. Now that North Korea's progressed Mars is conjunt its Jupiter, we can expect some dangerous military adventurism coming out of this renegade nation. Here are the charts that work so you can make your own predictions.
