re: Gable-Young - Your analysis of Loretta Young's and Clark Gable's charts got me thinking about birth times, trends, etc. I seem to be part of a cohort of women who had their one and only child at 40, we being some of the women who came of age in the late 60s and early seventies. Any prominent aspects affecting my group over those time eras? We definitely all came through that time when women/girls no longer had the absolute expectation (either personal or society-imposed) to marry and have kids right after college, or to "settle down" in some woman-friendly career, like teaching. We were the first wave to live feminism/women's lib. So what happened with us, astrologically speaking?
A. The Pill happened, along with the radical Uranus-Pluto conjunction in the 1960s that opposed conventional Saturn. It's noteworthy that the four main asteroids were first introduced into horoscopes, making a kind of gender balance among deployed planets.
re: Minnesota - Thanks for your thoughtful defense in the matter of the Minnesota education system and "liberalism." Your weekly newsletter is always a treat. However this comment of yours hit one of my personal issues. We are all in this together. Any person's children and grandchildren deserve a quality education. In part because they will be taking care of the previous generations as we get older. But also because it is morally correct to provide opportunities for every human to find his/her unique gifts to share with the world.

re: Clark Gable - It is surprising how many male Hollywood stars have prominent Venus aspects. I wonder if the old label of "feminine planet" pertaining to Venus really has meaning. Now that male good looks, indeed beauty,
A. Actually, celebrities are said to be ruled by Venus. They attract attention, like Venus. We can see how well this works in Clark Gable's and Loretta Young's charts.
re: Trump - You asked on your site "will Trump win,". According to my calculations, Trump's progressed Part of Fortune will be closely square natal Uranus in Gemini, which is Natally in his 10th house. I do not think so - but it is possible that this could indicate the the election of Trump could be a shock to everyone including him!!
A. Perhaps so. That would be a shock and disruptive to the political system. But like you, I doubt he will win. Historically, the only connections involved with tenth house indicators have been harmonious aspects, most commonly, the conjunction.
re: Sanger - Your writing on Margeret Sanger just makes her sound like such a lovely lady to do such wonderful things like paving the way for women and all... but really. DID her hatred for anything other than the white race get left out intentionally or are you just unaware?
I just love your astrological insight. But I swear you color it so much with your desire for the left to be all and win all. Maybe you just really dont realize it and see it ....I also am aware that there are not many Conservatives like myself who actually have a deep love or any understanding for astrology at all. You are obviously incredibly intelligent - or else you would not be able to comprehend the depths of Astrology the way you do.... but I have to say that intelligence stops when it comes to the loves of the left, communism, socialism, etc....
A. Actually, I am aware of her Nazi-like favoring of white supremacy. It's quite abhorrent. The problem is that I have only 250 to 300 words to get my astrological point across. I don't have the space to go into which of her policies were "good" and which were "bad". My aim was only to show how her birth control program was interconnected to today's politics via the Solar Eclipse.
re: U.S. economy - Isn't it a little ironic that the series of Uranus/Pluto squares is now over: ending in Spring 2015. Yet now, the economy starts to look shaky again with China's slowdown. Apparently 10 years of Federal Reserve intervention has its limits. It is almost like Uranus partially offset the Pluto opposition to the USA Sun but is no longer helping.
A. Uniquely in the U.S., Uranus has been a minor player in the Uranus-Pluto square. Most likely, the reason is because in the U.S. chart, the progressed Ascendant has been aligned with natal Pluto, emphasizing this factor. You can read about this in more detail at plutocracy.

A connection to the U.S. Moon used to be of the utmost importance. As a candidate, you have to connect with the people. You serve them. They vote for you. But now, it's all about power. A. No, you're doing something wrong. His Part of Fortune (progressed) is currently at 2 degrees Virgo. Do you have astrology calculation software? It'll be at 19 degrees Virgo in Nov 2016, which squares his 10th house Uranus. This describes a disruptive force more than an election win.
re: Syria - I always enjoy your weekly column. This week's piece on Syria was particularly of interest. When I changed the time (from Campion at 6 AM) to the Tyl time, I saw all you spoke about. Additionally I looked at the astrocartography map and the local space map. The latter shows the BML line going into the heart of Russia. This is particularly ominous...
re: Cubs - You wouldn't, by any chance, have a Chart for the Chicago Cubs Baseball Team? I can't seem to find any definitive date, except for 1870. I love to root for the Underdog.
re: Hillary - As a long term Hillary fan, I am delighted about her good showing in the recent Democratic debate. Those who dislike Hillary just love to drop those "hints of scandal" in an attempt to derail her campaign. The political pundits and the mainstream media are in for a revelation: Hillary is and has always been a great Presidential candidate!
re: mass murders - I think you have provided very convincing astrological details that confirm the Scorpio rising chart for the United States. It looks as though transiting Uranus will move out of orb to progressed Mars before too long. Do you think this will create a respite from mass murders such as the recent one in Oregon? I know there are other factors involved but taking Martian anger out of the set up looks positive for the future. Do you agree?
A. Yes, transiting Uranus will soon be out of range of activating the U.S. progressed Mars, but that definitely does not end the escalating trend of mass murders. Next come transiting Pluto, and also progressed Lilith will be joining progressed Mars in the U.S. 12th house. Progressed Lilith is just entering the U.S. 12th house now and will conjoin progressed Mars in January 2023, with both opposing progressed Chiron in the 6th house of health. This is an extremely dangerous set-up regarding violence as a health issue, and will be periodically activated by numerous outer planet transits between now and 2023.
re: guns - Given that the gun lobby is huge and powerful and that stupid amendment is, like, scripture to people, do you, also given this chart configuration, ever see anything ever being done to mitigate this stupidity? I refer you to Australia taking away everyone's guns after a particularly horrific mass killing. Since that nation-wide confiscation, no more mass killings. Imagine. Surprising how no guns can result in no killings.) I know that this is unlikely to happen to the Australian degree. But do you see gun enthusiasts giving an inch ever anywhere at all? Ever?
A. The Australian government didn't do a nation-wide confiscation of guns, but offered to buyback guns. The program was genius and inspirational, but would Americans follow suit? Unlikely any time soon, to my dismay.

re: European Union - Since the refugee crisis, much talk has centered around the difficulties of taking in such a mass of peoples whose cultures are so very different from those of Europe. I do hear more about the urgency of dealing with migrants that are huge in number and in many ways demanding, rather than desiring of fitting in wherever there opens a door. Most recently there's the opinion that this large-scale migration may well signal the end of the European Union. Some even are considering conspiracy theories of how such a movement was initiated, is perpetuated, and who it helps (i.e. Russia, the US and their oil interests). What do you see in the stars for the EU's future?
A. Sorting out the conspiracy theories from what's happening on the ground and the shifting policies of the various nations involved makes this a complex issue. The chart I use for the European Union, set for November 1, 1993, currently has transiting Uranus squaring the natal Uranus-Neptune conjunction, which fits the disrupting influence caused by the flood of immigrants. Beyond that, I can't say how this will work itself out. What happens in Syria is, of course, relevant, and there we have a state of constant flux, not to mention the numerous surrounding players vying for control. How Russia and the U.S. come to terms (or not) with the Middle East is another unknown vector. In short, there are too many variables to make any definitive statement on the effects to the Eurozone. However, I will study the EU chart some more and see if any internally directed effort can be mustered to resolve the crisis.

The European Union in Crisis
Early reports indicate that at least some of the terrorists involved in the horrific attack on Paris last Friday slipped into France with the flood of refugees from Syria. French president Francois Hollande declared a nationwide state of emergency and closed the borders, an act which undermines the EU policy of free movement within Europe. A look at the EU horoscope helps clarify what is happening.
The Treaty of European Union came into effect on November 1, 1993 (midnight; Brussels, Belgium) during some powerful, epoch-shaping outer planet alignments. The most obvious of these is the Uranus-Neptune conjunction at 18º Capricorn, which aims to build a structure (Capricorn) around unique (Uranus) and culturally amorphous (Neptune) entities. Within the EU, diverse language groups, religious backgrounds, and national allegiances have been subsumed into a larger identity.
Transiting Uranus is now making the opening square to this natal Uranus-Neptune conjunction, bringing a major challenge in the form of refugees from Middle East conflicts. Another major EU configuration is the Mars-Pluto conjunction in Scorpio squaring Saturn in Aquarius. This highly explosive configuration explains why decisive action in the EU (Mars-Pluto) faces lengthy delays and obstacles (Saturn), often leading to paralysis.
The EU response to the refugee crisis has been mixed, with Sweden and Germany opening their borders, and the rest being tentative and self-protective. The result is that Sweden has accepted more than it can handle. And as France closed its borders, Sweden began turning refugees away. The fate of the EU can be seen in its progressed Midheaven, which is now at 23º Taurus. From this point, it activates the Mars-Pluto-Saturn configuration. The EU will likely be in a state of stunned paralysis and tightening borders over the coming year as this progression plays out.
Trump’s Hostile Iowa Speech
Most pundits agree that Donald Trump’s speech in Iowa last Thursday crossed the line regarding what is acceptable behavior for presidential candidates. Trump unleashed a torrent of verbal attacks on his rivals, the press, and Iowa voters themselves in a 95-minute diatribe that was “vile and vulgar and vicious and morally deformed,” according to one conservative critic.
Astrologers have noted that Trump’s blunt, honest speech is rooted in his imperial Mars in Leo, which is placed right on his Leo Ascendant. His rise in American politics can be seen as corresponding to his progressed Sun arriving on this Mars-Ascendant dynamic. His Ascendant at 29º Leo is also conjunct Regulus, the first-magnitude star associated with royalty. That’s helped him advance on the national scene, but what happened last Thursday?
The answer becomes clear by looking at Trump’s progressed Mars, which is now at 8º Libra. At this position, it’s nearly square natal Mercury, and will be exact in May 2016. Mercury-Mars combinations tend to provoke verbal (Mercury) confrontations (Mars). Unless this aspect is alleviated by kinder or more empathetic placements, the tendency to be irritable, edgy, disruptive, and hostile takes over the personality.
In Trump’s case, this progressed Mars-to-Mercury aspect was activated by his progressed Moon at 8º Cancer, making a three-planet configuration. The progressed Moon advances one degree per month, so this set-up has been in effect for the past few weeks, waiting to explode. What triggered the foul-mouthed speech last Thursday was the transit of Black Moon Lilith at 8º Libra, which was conjoining his progressed Mars (orb: 0º17’), squaring his progressed Moon (orb: 0º03’), and squaring his natal Mercury (orb: 0º02’).
Emma Thompson’s Enduring Career
Mog’s Christmas Calamity, a video advertisement produced by the British supermarket chain Sainsbury’s, went viral last week, quickly earning praise for its creative artistry and heart-warming themes. The tale of the clumsy cat Mog is narrated by famed actress Emma Thompson, who adds her signature sense of irony, comedy and literary finesse. Thompson’s career is devoted to bringing literary works to life.
Emma Thompson was born with her Sun in the fiery, animated sign of Aries (April 15, 1959; London, UK; time unknown) where it gains depth and intensity by the trine to Pluto. Thompson’s Mercury is emphasized by its network of tight aspects around the chart. In Aries, Mercury squares Mars, giving her a sharp tongue and acerbic wit. The sextile to Venus in Gemini softens what can otherwise be an irritating Mars influence, making her verbal expression charming and graceful (when she wants).
Mercury’s additional aspects to Vesta, Saturn, Jupiter, and Pluto underscore her intellectual pursuits and keen interest in literature. With so many planets at 0º or 1º of the various signs, whenever a major transit or progression enters a new sign, Ms. Thompson gets a kick start in a new direction. A good example is when her progressed Mars entered Leo in 2004.
At the time, she starred in the third Harry Potter film as the eccentric divination teacher, Sybill Trelawney. She went on to reprise the role in two more Harry Potter films, which collectively became her highest grossing films. More recently, as Saturn entered Sagittarius and conjoined her Jupiter, she undertook the Mog’s Christmas Calamity project, which became the surprise hit of the holiday season. Expect huge successes for her over the coming two years as transiting Uranus conjoins her Sun.
