re: Monsanto - I just got the latest Mountain Astrologer (Aug/Sept 2013), and read the article on Monsanto. They use a birth date for Monsanto Chemical Works of November 29, 1901; 12:00 PM CST (rectified); Jefferson City, MO. Date from company public relations book, Faith, Hope and $5,000. You used a date of November 30, 1901. The early date puts the Moon at 27 deg. 49 min. Cancer, while yours puts the Moon at 11 deg. 40 min. Leo. Can you tell me what the source of your date is?
A. If you do a google search using the terms "Monsanto November 1901" you'll get a list of sites that show both dates. My understanding was that Monsanto filed the papers on the 29th and was incorporated the next day, the 30th. However, I see now that the 30th was a Saturday, so most likely the 29th is the correct date.

re: USA Moon - Do you consider the Moon in the USA chart to be Void of Course? I hadn't noticed this until I read this blog where the writer uses the Sibly chart, but the same would be true (by most traditional rules) in the Scorpio chart, too.
A. This is a common argument to justify using some other date for the national horoscope. No, I don't consider the Moon to be void of course, and for several reasons: 1) the v/c rule is meant to be applied to horary charts, not geopolitical or national horoscopes. 2) So using traditional aspects, the Moon is trine Mars. Using the so-called minor aspects, the Moon is also quincunx Mercury and Neptune, and these connections form a Yod. When considering the 8th harmonic aspects, the Moon is also part of a Fist of God formation, meaning its trioctile (sesquiquadrate or 135 degree aspect) both the Sun and Saturn. This is a very dynamic formation, and can be said to dominate the chart. 3) When considering the main four asteroids, the Moon is trine Juno, square Vesta, and applying to a conjunction with Pallas in Aquarius, a very powerful connection that reinforces democratic principles. And the Moon is sextile Chiron. So you see it has a network of aspects around the chart, including being the focal point of two major configurations.
re: Newcomers - I want to thank you for your "Newcomers" page. I've been introducing some friends to astrology and this page will be very helpful to them. I'm pleased, too, that my library includes several of the recommended books. I may pick them up and re-read them as a good review!

A. Yes, her Neptune is at 10 degrees Libra and being squared by transiting Pluto. Neptune, the planet associated with scandal, is being activated by the UR-PL square, which has led to so many breakdowns and in so many diverse ways.
re: Federer - What happened to Feddy ( Roger Federer) at Wimbledon? That beautiful soul was DESTROYED and as I watched him fumble, and miss "easy for him" shots a little bit of me also lost confidence and buoyancy. Does his loss mean he's finished? Kudos tho' to his young opponent Stakhovsky who played well. But is this on-going?
A. A number of icons have recently collapsed due to the Uranus-Pluto square. Consider Paula Deen and the price of gold as other examples. As for Federer, looks like it's also a clear case of Mercury turning retrograde. You'll notice that he wasn't the only top seed to lose to a much lower seed. Merc was (still is) squaring Federer's Pluto, making him second-guess everything, a mental disorder. The wet grounds may have shook him and other favorites. Also transiting Saturn is squaring Fed's progressed Mars which no doubt throws his timing off, and can be very frustrating. He'll get over it...
re: Paula Deen - I've so often enjoyed your work . I wanted to touch base about this out of control energy/revolt over Paula Deen's fall from grace. Having glanced at her chart she isn’t a light weight but I've grown concerned with the unending battle/attack over all this that has spread to companies dropping her & her products. Any looks into her future? Will she just regroup & move on like Martha Stewart or will there be a complete over all redirect down the road. Why is all this happening now from your point of view?
re: U.S. Scorpio Rising - Your belief (which I share) that the United States has a Scorpio ascendent is being vindicated by all the secrecy being uncovered. Before it used to be all conjecture and stories concerning the secret happenings within the government. Michael, what is the progression chart of the United States and would it show the bright light sifting through the cracks and exposing hidden agendas? Isn't Pluto coming full circle in the near future? Would you say that a new Phoenix is about to rise? I am so excited and pumped. Because as the USA goes, so goes the rest of the world. Could you comment?
re: Snowden - If not for the insidious Boston Marathon terrorist attack, I sould be congratulating Snowden. However, neither Julian Assange nor Edward Snowden seem to care that there are forces in this world that would delight in destroying the very freedoms they claim to be upholding. I think both men are hungry for attention and power. Score Pluto 1/ Uranus 0.

re: Lilith - I wonder how you figure out where and if Black Moon Lilith is in your chart.
A. First, Lilith is in everyone’s chart, so if you have an astrology calculation program, it’s just a matter of enabling her as a displayed point. Second, it’s important to know that there are two Liliths, a mean and true position. I use the mean position, as do most Europeans who tend to use Lilith more than Chiron (especially the French). The most referenced site is astrodienst, where you can find your mean Lilith. Just click on the year that you’re interested in.
re: NSA - I have another chart for the NSA: 11/4/52 at 12:00:01 AM in Washington, DC. This could be when the agency officially became an entity, I don't know. Anyway the 11/4 chart has Pluto conjunct the Leo Ascendant... which appeals to me more. What are your thoughts?
A. Yes, Nov 4, 1952 is also a good date to use for NSA. It's when it officially first began operation, as opposed to when Truman signed the order to create it. In the Oct 24, 1952 10:45 am chart, Pluto trines the Ascendant, which in turn is aligned with the U.S. Mars. Also, Saturn in the 10th describes the NSA as a powerful bureaucracy, while in the Nov 4 chart, the most elevated planet is Jupiter in Taurus - not particularly descriptive of the spy agency. I've compared the two charts to historical events, especially the most recent revelations, and the Oct 24 looks more accurate to me.
re: Obama's dilemma - I really think what Saturn is trying to show us may be that our country has a "systems" problem. The President's political adversaries do like to paint these three "scandals" as symptoms of his "failures." But I think they could all be fixed by fixing the "broken" system in Washington D.C. Maybe that Saturn hit in September is also a signal that we need to change our broken political system. (The debt ceiling "crisis," etc.?) Maybe if politicians weren't run by their powerful "1%" backers Congress could start true bi-partisan work and work with our President again. I have enjoyed reading what we have in store for us in regard to the planets.

re: Gwyneth Paltrow - I love Gwyneth Paltrow. You did not mentioned her Mars Pluto conjunction. I am a Scorpion married to a Libran, who has Mars Pluto conjunction at Leo, at midheaven. People, find a place to hide when Mars and Pluto explode beneath the Venus facade. Expect to see Gwyneth at more violent / action movies. Venus is more beautiful when Mars the beast is channelled positively.

The Season of Accidents and Disasters
Coincidentally, the crash of Asiana Airlines Flight 214 while landing at the San Francisco Airport happened on the same day as Canada’s worst train accident in over a century. We’ve seen spectacular accidents and mishaps all month, including numerous disasters during the 4th of July celebrations, and an experienced Cirque du Soleil aerialist plunging to her death during a Las Vegas show.
Astrologically, one might attribute these mishaps to the ongoing Uranus-Pluto square, which can lead to collapses and technological glitches. But the accidents seem primarily associated with transportation issues, which would point to Mercury retrograde and any afflictions in Gemini. Mercury has been retrograde since June 25, and Mars was in Gemini until last Saturday, July 13.
Most recently (July 13), a speeding truck crashed into a crowded bus in Moscow, killing at least 20 passengers. Mars was in the last minutes of the last degree of Gemini as this latest accident took place. Now that Mars is in Cancer and Mercury will soon turn direct, can we hope for some relief from this spate of
accidents. Unfortunately, another configuration is shaping up that indicates that catastrophic, spectacular accidents and disasters are still looming.
Mars in Cancer is heading into an opposition to Pluto and a square to Uranus, triggering the underlying confrontational tension in this dynamic. These astro-events take place on the 27th and 31st, but transiting Mars tends to stir up trouble well before the aspect is exact. Also, on July 17 (Wednesday), Uranus is turning retrograde in Aries, bringing its potential action to peak voltage. The transiting Lunar Node axis will be within one degree of Uranus’s degree through the first week of August, which accentuates the possibility for major catastrophes. Be careful!
Malala at the United Nations
Last Friday, on the occasion of her 16th birthday, Malala Yousafzai* addressed the United Nations to demand education for every child on the planet. Wearing the shawl of slain Pakistani leader Benazir Bhutto, she spoke with dignity, grace, and compelling elegance. “Nothing changed in my life except this: weakness, fear and hopelessness died. Strength, power and courage was born,” she said.
Astrologically, Malala (July 12, 1997; Mingaora, Pakistan; time unknown) and Benazir Bhutto (June 21, 1953; 7:59 pm; Karachi, Pakistan) have some startling connections between their charts. Most significantly, they both have numerous placements around 20º of the cardinal signs. Among these, Malala’s Sun at 20º Cancer squares Saturn at 20º Aries, and Ms. Bhutto’s Ceres at 19º Cancer squares Saturn at 20º Libra.
What both these women are activating is a powerful feminine dynamic in Pakistan’s national horoscope: the Moon at 18º Cancer opposite Black Moon Lilith at 21º Capricorn. In itself, the Cancer Moon opposite Lilith is a formula for domestic unrest, but in a traditional patriarchal society, it represents an emotional, instinctive mistrust of women in authority. Since both Malala and Bhutto have Saturn in aspect to Pakistan’s Moon-Lilith polarity, they each personify the Taliban’s worst fears of empowered women.

By secondary progression, Malala’s Sun is now at 5º Leo, which is exactly conjunct Pakistan’s Mercury. This alignment shows us how she is voicing the needs of women and children in Pakistan and around the world: “The extremists were and they are afraid of books and pens. The power of education silenced them. They are afraid of women.” Transiting Jupiter and Lilith recently entered the sign of Cancer and are now heading toward Malala’s Sun. Together, Lilith and Jupiter will bring her much honor, and quite possibly, the Nobel Peace Prize.
Randy Travis’s Demons
On July 7, country singer Randy Travis was admitted to a hospital for congestive heart failure. Since then he has had a stroke and brain surgery, and remains heavily sedated and in critical condition. Doctors reporting on his condition said that “he had previously been in excellent health”, but in fact, his life has been falling apart since his divorce on October 29, 2010.
Travis was born with his Taurus Sun square Uranus and his Aries Moon square Saturn (May 4, 1959; 6:14 am; Marshville, NC), which as a child, made his relationships with his father and mother extremely challenging. Also, considering that Uranus is in his 4th house of the home, he became a troublemaker at an early age, and was repeatedly arrested for burglary and car theft before he was 16.
His 7th house of partners shows where he found help: a Ceres-Jupiter conjunction on the Descendant shows the benefits he would receive from a motherly partner**. In 1975, when his progressed Midheaven was squaring Ceres, he won a talent contest at a nightclub. The owner, Lib Hatcher, became his manager, and eventually divorced her husband and moved in with Travis. They lived together for 16 years before marrying on May 31, 1991 when transiting Saturn conjoined his Midheaven.
With his Sun conjunct Black Moon Lilith in the 12th house, Travis wrestles with numerous psychological demons. His former wife is 18 years older than him, and took care of him as a mother would. They divorced when transiting Saturn was conjunct his Juno: his music career was fading and she could no longer make him a star. Transiting Uranus is now opposite his Juno, suggesting that his relationship issues are behind his physical collapse.
