re: Inauguration - I've always read about how if the President is sworn in during a moon void of course that he will have trouble being effective during his term, and that this was the case for Obama last term. I have just read that he was privately sworn in at 11:55am EST, just *before* the moon void! Any thoughts for your column? As a Dem, I'm thrilled to see this, and hope this will empower the Prez to route those untoward Republicans, who just sit on their hands, seemingly out of spite or racism or craziness.

A. The Inauguration chart, set for noon, was posted and described in NewsScope's December 31, 2012 issue. The Moon makes one final square to Mars before going void of course, which does in deed push Obama into action.
re: Salopek - I enjoyed reading about Paul Salopek, mostly because my best friend's birthday is also Feb 9, 1962. She's one of the Aqua-stells as well. Her stellium falls in her 4th house though so she's all about her family, and her challenges lately have been about teenagers!
A. That week in February 1962 has some notoriety, since psychic Jeanne Dixon predicted that the "anti-Christ" would be born during the New Moon on February 4, 1962. Later, she changed her mind and said it would be the second coming of Jesus. Sheryl Crowe was born on February 11, 1962, Jennifer Jason Leigh was born on febraury 5, 1962, and King Abdullah II of Jordan was born on January 30, 1962.
re: Hillary Clinton - Do you see anything in hillary clinton's chart as a sign of her current health problems?
A. Yes, she's going through a handful of challenging Saturn transits and progressions: transiting Saturn has been conjunct her Sun, progressed Mercury to Saturn, progressed Moon to Saturn, and more. These are indications that she needs a rest. The unexpected accident happened as her progressed Midheaven was exactly trioctile Uranus -- exhaustion and over-work allow these mishaps into our lives.
re: 2013 - I'm wondering if anyone will be writing about Supermoons for 2013, or anything else that points to dates to be aware of.
re: economy - Will you please do year 2013 and its overall effects in our lives, finances as we the people depend on the whims of congress which has NO idea what they want to do. As a senior citizen, i respect your work and read it every week and would like to read about this if it is possible.
re: rightwingers - I enjoy your NewsScope segment. I find it very interesting that two of the highest profile uncompromising right wingers share this energy. Eric Cantor has a Sun opposition Moon both square Pluto. (The NRA's Wayne) LaPierre has Moon opposed Pluto both Square the Sun. These two will never look for common ground.
re: Inauguation date - January 20 is a Sunday, so they'll be doing the oath on Monday, January 21.
A. The official private ceremony is on the 20th, a Sunday. A public ceremony will be held the following day, the 21st, as happened during Reagan's inauguration.

re: Adam Lanza - I enjoyed your Newscope on Adam Lanza and the connections between his chart and that of the U.S. One has to wonder, however, why Newtown, CT? Have you had a chance to look at important dates for this town?
Here's the link for Newtown's city charter which shows its founding date and dates that its charter was adopted and revised. The city was founded on October 11, 1711 which gives it a Sun of 17º Libra which would complete a T-square in Adam's chart by opposing his Venus and squaring his Uranus-Neptune conjunction. The U.S. progressed Mars at 18º Libra is conjunct Newtown's Sun.The first city charter for Newtown was adopted on October 2, 1961 (chart for noon). Its Mars-Mercury conjunction in Scorpio creates a Grand Square with Adam's Sun/Ceres/Chiron T-Square. A. He could have. I noticed that transiting Mars was squaring his Sun on the night of the murder, which is an indicator for anger and even violence. But without an accurate birth time, I won't make that judgment. The Belize government provides a safe harbor for narco-traffickers, so he very well could be right about them wanting his millions...
re: 8º Sagittarius - Thank you for your weekly Newscope. It is accurate, thought provoking, informative and thoroughly enjoyable.
I am part of an Astrology discussion group and we have been noticing the prominence of 8 degrees of Sag in several charts. The Winter Solstice chart has a Yod whose reaction point is 8 Sag in the 2nd house of the US chart. We read that degree, which, I think, is the Fixed star Han, as the degree of blindness. It seems the US is blind to 2nd house matters, such as values and money. Do you have any opinion on this subject? I value your insight.
A. Thanks for your letter, and I'm glad you find the Scorpio Rising chart a useful way to examine U.S. affairs. Yes, I've been discussing the Yod between Jupiter, Saturn and Pluto which aligns with 8º Sag. The Yod activates the many points in the US chart at 8º of their respective signs, including the Ascendant, Uranus, Ceres, and Eris.
As for the stars, I generally consider only those with a 1st magnitude brilliance, and I believe most astrologers who use the stars do as well. Han is therefore a weak influence, especially considering that Aldebaran and Antares are in the same degree area and are both 1st magnitude stars. Also, I would advise against making broad generalizations about the US being blind to values and money matters, which sound more like your personal opinion than an insightful analysis based on astrological principles. In other words, when you refer to the US, who are you really talking about, the leaders (symbolized by the Sun), the people (Moon), or maybe the government bureaucracy (Saturn)? What objective statements can you make about the Solstice chart? What does it say about our future in 2013 or the next quarter? re: Orcus - Fascinating article re: Orcus, which may have helped to explain the (to me) unexplainable, as I was so sure Romney would squeak by into office. This made me wonder if my 3 degree Virgo rising w/out planets means something insidious. Romney seemed to me to be one who often suppressed his own real feelings, so it's interesting that this may have subconsciously also translated into suppression of votes by faulty equipment. As Jung said, 'As above so below' . Also, Interesting that Assad was born on 9/11… Thanks again for fascinating stuff!

The Brilliant Moon-Jupiter Occultation
At 10:12 pm EST on Monday, January 21, the Moon and Jupiter are conjunct. While this event happens once a month, this week the Moon occults Jupiter, meaning it appears to pass right over Jupiter, temporarily blocking it from view. Astronomers at Sky & Telescope are promoting the stunning visual appeal, and noting that the event takes place near Aldabaren, one of the brightest stars in the sky.
Astrologically, this occultation (visible only in South America) may bring some important developments for celebrities and politicians with their Sun or other important placements at 6º Gemini, which is where the occultation takes place. The opposition is also effective, and using an orb of less than 3º. Since the first magnitude stars Aldebaran and Antares are aligned with this occultation, it highlights the culture’s luminaries, the movers and shakers.
Many U.S. politicians are affected. Obama’s Moon at 3º Gemini falls in line, and his second inauguration is the corresponding event. The Kennedy clan has several members in this group, and includes the Sun positions of John F. Kennedy and his daughter, Caroline Kennedy Schlossberg. Rudolph Giuliani, Rahm Emanuel, and Henry Kissinger also have their Suns aligned with this occultation. Any or all of them may be in the news soon….
The well-known celebrities influenced by the Moon-Jupiter event are even more numerous. Among some of the notables is Shiloh Jolie-Pitt, whose status may change soon when her parents get married. Rachel Carson, who wrote Silent Spring and kick-started the environmental movement, may be honored in some way. Kim Kardashian’s 12th house Mars (trouble with her men)… And then there’s Robert Wagner’s Jupiter at 6º Gemini, which is located in his 7th house of partners. Occultations aren’t necessarily beneficial, just newsworthy or spectacular.
The Moon-Jupiter occultation conjoins the U.S. Uranus, energizing the factions of Americans associated with this archetype.
Natalie Wood’s Case Re-Opened
Last Monday, the L.A. County coroner in the Natalie Wood case changed the cause of death from “accidental drowning” to “drowning and other undetermined factors”. Investigators announced that they have new witnesses and have uncovered more evidence, but haven’t yet decided if a crime was committed. Robert Wagner and Christopher Walken were the last two people to see her alive, and they had been arguing.
Natalie Wood (July 20, 1938; 11:16 am; San Francisco, CA) was not suicidal. Her Sun-Mars-Pluto triple conjunction signifies a go-getter, someone who relishes life to the fullest -- a fighter, not a quitter. On November 28, 1981, the date of the incident, Natalie’s Jupiter in the 5th house of entertainment was under major activation by a square from Uranus and a trine from Jupiter, indicating that she was enjoying herself to the max, drinking and partying.
Transiting Saturn had recently opposed her natal Saturn in the 7th house of partners, which suggests tension in her marriage to Wagner (Saturn representing the older partner). This is corroborated by transiting Uranus (the divorce planet) recently passing over her Juno (the marriage asteroid) and applying to her progressed Juno.
This was a troubled partnership. Walken’s Sun at 10º Aries and Wagner’s progressed Sun at 12º Aries both landed right on Natalie’s Descendant: they were arguing about her.
Natalie’s progressed Mars at 26º Leo was forming a perfect trioctile (135º) to her Descendant, which naturally fueled the arguments. Most likely, she had been flirting with Walken, since transiting Pluto conjunct her progressed Venus was activating her erotic nature. Plus, a transiting Sun-Lilith conjunction that night perfectly squared her Venus, encouraging her to express her Inner Wild Woman. Wagner must have been enraged by her provocative behavior.
Royal Pregnancies
A reader asks, “I keep seeing tabloid rumors about Chelsea Clinton becoming pregnant. Will she become a mother relatively soon?” Astrologers have traditionally relied on the Moon and the 5th house conditions to determine the answer to this question, but in my view, the asteroid Ceres is a more reliable indicator. Ceres is associated with the parent-child relationship and life’s major transitions, especially pregnancy.
America’s and England’s royal princesses, Kim Kardashian and Kate Middleton, have been in the news recently since both are expecting a child this coming July. Kim’s chart (October 21, 1980; 10:46 am; Los Angeles, CA) shows Ceres at 23º Cancer and her Sun at 28º Libra. By secondary progression, her Ceres is now at 27º Cancer, and nearly square her Sun. This shows how the mothering instincts are kicking in.
In July, her progressed Part of Fortune will conjoin her progressed Ceres, which readily translates into a newborn child. We don’t have an accurate birth time for Kate (b. January 9, 1982), but her Ceres is being activated by four outer planets – a sure sign of pregnancy. She will also give birth in July when transiting Jupiter trines her Ceres.
Chelsea Clinton (February 27, 1980; 11:24 pm; Little Rock, AK) has her Ceres at 26º Aries, which is not being activated by any outer planet transits. However, by secondary progression, Ceres is at 8º Taurus and nearly sextile to her Pisces Sun. This is a strong indicator that she wants to be a mother and may be trying to get pregnant. However, her natal Ceres opposes Pluto near the 12th house of hidden psychological influences, which may effectively block her from actually getting pregnant.
