"The natal chart is like a seed and progressions are the unfolding in time of that into the plant it is to become. Transits, are like a daily weather report. In political astrology, these three factors have to be taken into account!"

Reader feedback

re: economy - I am on your site every day and I keep looking for a "Financial Forecast" for 2013 as I have read several astrological articles stating that we might fall into a recession in 2013 lasting into 2015.  What is your take on the future of the U.S. financial status? Thank you for sharing with the world all of your insights.

re: election - Don't forget that Florida's election returns were not fully certified until Thursday after the Tuesday election. Luckily these returns were not conclusive, but I believe this fulfilled the Mercury Retrograde motion hanging over the election night. Thanks for your honest assessment on the morning after of your predictions. I think it boils down to: Americans were not going to elect a new president when Mercury was stationary on Election Day and going retrograde. I look forward to your columns every week.

re:election - I've been reading your newscopes about the election and have to say that you did a very good job of describing how that election was going to go and what the end result would be. In your newscope today a reader suggests you eat humble pie....I disagree.

re: election - You had me completely prepared/depressed about Romney's election as President. Thank you for helping me be so happy today. I keep remembering how you called the 2008 election, and predicted really good things for Hillary and Bill Clinton after the election. That's part of the reason I've trusted you so much. So the next question is: Will Obama do the same with Romney -- give him a significant cabinet post/responsibility that will effectively use Romney's managerial skills? It's something I would love to see.

A. As for Romney, yes, I missed that one, but it sure was close going down to the wire. If Hurricane Sandy hadn't shown up, or the unemployment rate was still at 8.0 percent instead of 7.9 percent, it could very well have gone the other way. Neither of these last minute, random events were visible in the candidates' charts.... Obama may ask Romney to come onboard, but I don't know if Romney would accept. It might be a very useful tactic to get some bipartisan action, and Obama does like to make a Team of Rivals.

re: election - Love your column. I now think that the more a candidate has of 25 degree natal planets/bodies, that determines the winner rather than progressed. Obama has the most. Thus Romney lost...thank goodness for our nation's sake!

A. I'm glad you feel the Scorpio Rising chart is the best way to assess a candidate's chances.

re: election - In your anaysis of how the election would go, you kind of set aside Obama's aspects to the US chart and the Moon, and instead reached for Romney's progressed aspects, some already past, to predict him the winner. You did not mention that Obama has his progressed Mars tightly trine the US natal Moon.on Election Day! In my book, that is a far more powerful indice than asteroids, and a square from progressed planets. That same progressed Mars, squares the US Pluto, ruler of the US first house. Interesting. Okay, then.

A. Your insights about Obama's chart and its comparison to the U.S. Moon (uniquely at 25 AQ in the U.S. Scorpio Rising horoscope) may be the best interptretation of why he won. I would add that Obama's progressed Mars does indeed trine the U.S. Moon, but it's about 1/4 degree past the exact trine, which makes it a waning influence. Still, he did tout his strong resumé as Commander-in-Chief. Yes, his progressd Mars in diplomatic Libra goes on to square the U.S. Pluto in 2014, which may very well bring a marshalling of U.S. allies against a recalcitrant foe, such as Iran.

re: election - In NewsScope Q & A, you recently wrote: "If he [Romney] becomes the Commander-In-Chief, It likely won't be long before the U.S. is engaged in a major military conflict, and a potential devastating one." QUESTION: Now that Obama has been re-elected, does the above forecast still stand, or was that forecast strictly unique to Romney's chart?

A. I was definitely concerned that Romney would lead us into a major military conflict due to his progressed Mars in Aries and that his military advisers were 70 percent taken from Bush's neocons. The U.S. progressed Sun will be squaring natal Uranus next year, and that will likely present a military challenge. Hopefully, Obama's progressed Mars in Libra is better equipped diplomatically to manage that crisis.

re: election - I am so glad your prediction about Pres Obama did not come true!!! I am looking forward to your column this weekend to read what happened astrologically!!!

re: election - I'm sure you've gotten mail from many readers about the election. I'm so glad you were wrong. I was convinced Romney was going to win, very much in part because of your predictions and reasons why but also because of my own beliefs that the Republicans will do anything to steal an election and I fully expected it. Perhaps what you're seeing on Inauguration Day for Romney involves something entirely different in his life.

re: election - Just as I predicted! A Pisces Sun  can no longer be elected president.

re: election - Thank you for your great column each week. I have not missed any article for several years. Even though Mitt Romney was not elected president, you are probably correct in predicting than Romney enjoys a better transit than Obama on inauguration day. Mitt Romney will have a much easier time than Obama, who will face the daunting task of the fiscal cliff.

re: election - As to the election results, I fully agree with you that the answer to who would be the winner was exceedingly difficult this time around.  I voted for Obama because I am greatly concerned about climate change and Romney offered nothing but the "drill baby drill" rhetoric. I emailed you back in the summer on the possiblity that Obama might lose and that we could only hope for a miracle to change the tide.  Looks like that miracle was Hurricane Sandy: Obama was in his finest presidential mode and climate change is back  in the spotlight once again.

re: election - Even the best can sometimes get it wrong. It just goes to show how hard real astrology can be. Looking forward to the next newscope.

re: Neptune - You were obviously on-the-money as to Neptune playing a pivotal role in the 2012 presidential election.Superstorm Sandy’s massive devastation on the eastern seaboard may well affect an individual’s ability to get to a polling place and vote.

re: trioctile - You said in the Top Five Astro-Events Oct. 2012 that Jupiter and Saturn form a Trioctile... I was wondering if that Trioctile is the same as the Sesquisquare?  Anyways... love your site... thanks.

A. yes, same thing - 165 degree aspect. And an octile is the same as a semisquare. I prefer the terms "octile" and "trioctile" because they're clearly aspects made by dividing the circle into eighths, while "sesquisquare" is such an archaic tongue-twister...

Mohamed Morsi, Egypt’s New Pharaoh

How does a country deal with its creative but over-reaching Leo president? Only a day after he received international praise for brokering the Israeli-Hamas ceasefire, Egypt’s President Mohamed Morsi granted himself temporary autocratic powers until a new constitution is accepted. The riots that have followed make clear Egypt’s shredded social fabric as political opponents battle to form a secular or Islamic government.
Morsi* was born with a dictatorial Sun-Pluto conjunction in the royal sign of Leo (August 20, 1951; Sharqia, Egypt; time unknown). Mars in Leo and a Moon-Jupiter conjunction in Aries underscore his self-confidence, initiative, and willingness to be the strongman leader if it will help advance the process. He issued the controversial decree just as transiting Mercury (documents) was squaring his Pluto (power).

Morsi officially took office on June 30, 2012 when the Sun was at 8º Cancer and aligned with the first of seven Uranus-Pluto squares at 8º Aries and 8º Capricorn. In other words, his personal empowerment and term in office is imprinted with all the revolutionary impulses associated with the “Arab Spring”. After Pluto’s retrograde cycle, it has now returned to 8º Capricorn.
By secondary progression, Morsi’s Saturn is at 8º Libra, perfectly in line with the ongoing Uranus-Pluto square. The intense conflict resulting from his decree can be seen in the current Mars-Pluto conjunction at 8º Capricorn. Morsi and the Egyptian people can expect a rough ride over the next two years as transiting Uranus and Pluto activate his natal Jupiter-Uranus square. Over the next two months, transiting Mars will oppose his Leo planets, intensifying the current conflict.

December’s Top Five Astro-Events

1. Jupiter conjoins Black Moon Lilith on the 11th, and is most influential from the 8th to 13th.  This combination urges individuals to speak their truth to authority, especially where equal rights are concerned. It may empower some to become more independent, while others become victimized by traditional expectations. Watch out for mental hyperactivity that leads to accidents or relationship problems if not understood at the soul level.

2. The New Moon on the 13th kicks off an action-filled month, especially with Uranus turning direct on the same day. Since this New Moon opposes the U.S. Mars, expect important or even explosive developments wherever U.S. military forces are engaged or could be deployed. Winter storms may make travel unusually difficult or perilous.

3. Saturn conjoins the U.S. Scorpio Ascendant on the 20th, marking the first of three passes to this key point. Saturn imbues the nation with a strong presence and responsibilities on the world stage, and suggests that the “fiscal cliff” will be constructively managed even if not totally resolved. Although the ongoing Uranus-Pluto square may threaten the global financial system, Saturn here through September 2013 helps maintain a stable national economy.
4. The Winter Solstice on December 21 takes place as Jupiter, Saturn and Pluto form a Yod, a rare three-planet configuration bound to bring historic events and turning points. The pragmatic, conservative combination of Saturn sextile Pluto stimulated by grandiose Jupiter aims to establish long-term financial, political, and military security. This Winter Solstice is a good time to participate in collective experiences.

5. The Full Moon on the 28th activates the epic Uranus-Pluto square, making the last week of December unusually dynamic. The Sun-Uranus square on the 25th is an awakener, introducing the unexpected, surprising, and even shocking on an otherwise traditional day. The Sun-Pluto conjunction on the 30th is a power day, when those in charge assert their control and influence.
Alfred Hitchcock and the Making of Psycho

How does a wife deal with the creative but arrogant genius of a Leo? The film Hitchcock tells the story of Psycho, and is as much about the making of this hallmark thriller as his turbulent marriage. The all-star cast of Anthony Hopkins, Helen Mirren, and Scarlett Johansson ensures that this introspective look at one of Hollywood’s favorite stars will be an Oscar contender.
Alfred Hitchcock was born with his Leo Sun conjunct Black Moon Lilith (August 13, 1899; 3:15 am; London), a combination that explains his obsession with the dark side of the human psyche, especially the hidden rage that explodes with violence and horror. His Leo Sun is enhanced by a sextile to Pluto and trine to Saturn, giving him a need to be in charge and in control, which he naturally fulfilled as a director.

Venus in Leo conjoins his Leo Ascendant, reminding us how he lures viewers in with blond beauties, such as Grace Kelly, Kim Novak, and Janet Leigh. A Moon-Jupiter conjunction in Scorpio squares the Ascendant, adding a delightful sense of the macabre, and the humorous or ironic twist to his films. With Aquarius on his seventh house of partners, Uranus represents his wife. Uranus trine his Ascendant accurately depicts her close cooperation in his major films.
Psycho premiered on June 16, 1960 not long after Black Moon Lilith had entered Hitchcock’s 12th house of secrets. Lilith was exactly squaring his Mars during the premiere, a combination that resonates with James Holmes*, who was born with Lilith in his 12th house square Mars. Also during the Psycho premiere, transiting Uranus was conjunct Hitchcock’s Sun, making him an instant superstar, but astrologically hinting at the vital role of his wife, Alma Reville.
* James Holmes fulfilled the Psycho role when he massacred theater-goers during the premiere of The Dark Knight Rises. See nsc072312 which was written before his 9:04 pm birth time made the rounds. A full article on Holmes will appear in Dell Horoscope in early 2013.
