re: McAfee - Given his chart and the transits and progressions at the time, do you think that he may have done it?
A. He could have. I noticed that transiting Mars was squaring his Sun on the night of the murder, which is an indicator for anger and even violence. But without an accurate birth time, I won't make that judgment. The Belize government provides a safe harbor for narco-traffickers, so he very well could be right about them wanting his millions...
re: 8º Sagittarius - Thank you for your weekly Newscope. It is accurate, thought provoking, informative and thoroughly enjoyable.
I am part of an Astrology discussion group and we have been noticing the prominence of 8 degrees of Sag in several charts. The Winter Solstice chart has a Yod whose reaction point is 8 Sag in the 2nd house of the US chart. We read that degree, which, I think, is the Fixed star Han, as the degree of blindness. It seems the US is blind to 2nd house matters, such as values and money. Do you have any opinion on this subject? I value your insight.
A. Thanks for your letter, and I'm glad you find the Scorpio Rising chart a useful way to examine U.S. affairs. Yes, I've been discussing the Yod between Jupiter, Saturn and Pluto which aligns with 8º Sag. The Yod activates the many points in the US chart at 8º of their respective signs, including the Ascendant, Uranus, Ceres, and Eris.
As for the stars, I generally consider only those with a 1st magnitude brilliance, and I believe most astrologers who use the stars do as well. Han is therefore a weak influence, especially considering that Aldebaran and Antares are in the same degree area and are both 1st magnitude stars.
Also, I would advise against making broad generalizations about the US being blind to values and money matters, which sound more like your personal opinion than an insightful analysis based on astrological principles. In other words, when you refer to the US, who are you really talking about, the leaders (symbolized by the Sun), the people (Moon), or maybe the government bureaucracy (Saturn)? What objective statements can you make about the Solstice chart? What does it say about our future in 2013 or the next quarter?
re: Orcus - Fascinating article re: Orcus, which may have helped to explain the (to me) unexplainable, as I was so sure Romney would squeak by into office. This made me wonder if my 3 degree Virgo rising w/out planets means something insidious. Romney seemed to me to be one who often suppressed his own real feelings, so it's interesting that this may have subconsciously also translated into suppression of votes by faulty equipment. As Jung said, 'As above so below' . Also, Interesting that Assad was born on 9/11… Thanks again for fascinating stuff!

A. No, I haven't written a book since then. I'll have to consider writing another one soon...
re: election - Love your column. I now think that the more a candidate has of 25 degree natal planets/bodies, that determines the winner rather than progressed. Obama has the most. Thus Romney lost...thank goodness for our nation's sake!
A. I'm glad you feel the Scorpio Rising chart is the best way to assess a candidate's chances.
re: election - In your anaysis of how the election would go, you kind of set aside Obama's aspects to the US chart and the Moon, and instead reached for Romney's progressed aspects, some already past, to predict him the winner. You did not mention that Obama has his progressed Mars tightly trine the US natal Moon.on Election Day! In my book, that is a far more powerful indice than asteroids, and a square from progressed planets. That same progressed Mars, squares the US Pluto, ruler of the US first house. Interesting. Okay, then.
A. Your insights about Obama's chart and its comparison to the U.S. Moon (uniquely at 25 AQ in the U.S. Scorpio Rising horoscope) may be the best interptretation of why he won. I would add that Obama's progressed Mars does indeed trine the U.S. Moon, but it's about 1/4 degree past the exact trine, which makes it a waning influence. Still, he did tout his strong resumé as Commander-in-Chief. Yes, his progressd Mars in diplomatic Libra goes on to square the U.S. Pluto in 2014, which may very well bring a marshalling of U.S. allies against a recalcitrant foe, such as Iran.
re: trioctile - You said in the Top Five Astro-Events Oct. 2012 that Jupiter and Saturn form a Trioctile... I was wondering if that Trioctile is the same as the Sesquisquare? Anyways... love your site... thanks.
A. yes, same thing - 165 degree aspect. And an octile is the same as a semisquare. I prefer the terms "octile" and "trioctile" because they're clearly aspects made by dividing the circle into eighths, while "sesquisquare" is such an archaic tongue-twister...

The Shooter, Adam Lanza
Adam Lanza, the shooter at the Connecticut elementary school, was born on April 22, 1992 in Kingston, NH* (time unknown). At first glance, his Taurus Sun trine Jupiter would seem to indicate a noble personality, one who could become successful if he applied himself. He was in fact an honors student and lived with his mother in a prosperous neighborhood. But somewhere along the way, he developed a “personality disorder”.

Astrologically, the first clue to this lifestyle change is the sharp square between his Venus in Aries and the Uranus-Neptune conjunction in Capricorn. Venus in Aries represents his bold, provocative style, and with the square to Uranus-Neptune, involves fantasy and shock value. One acquaintance described him as being “very thin, remote, and was one of the goths.”
The mother image is strong in Adam Lanza’s chart. His Ceres in Aquarius opposes Chiron in Leo, with both squaring his Taurus Sun. Ceres-Chiron is the “wounded mother” archetype which imprinted so strongly on his personal identity (Sun). He evidently was lashing out at the mother who made him feel psychologically wounded. Also, note that transiting Pluto was conjunct his Capricorn Moon, the traditional representative of an ambitious mother.
Mars in fantasy-oriented Pisces is fueled by close aspects to the three outer planets, perhaps giving him a penchant for violent games which spontaneously shifted to reality. By secondary progression, Mars was conjunct his Mercury in Aries, an action-oriented combination concerning his mother, since Mercury is closely sextile his Ceres. On the day of the shooting, Uranus turned direct in Aries, right on this progressed Mars-Mercury link. This marked the signal for direct, impulsive combat with the perceived enemy: his mother and everything she represented.

A Sick Nation: The U.S. Twelfth House
The United States is unquestionably the most violent nation in the industrialized world, especially when considering murder, suicide, and mass shootings. Both the United Nations and the Center for Disease Control point out that the U.S. has a chronic health issue regarding violence and the use of firearms. The U.S. Scorpio Rising chart uniquely reflects this national trait, with its afflicted co-ruling planets Mars and Pluto.
When considering health issues, astrologers generally look at the 6th and 12th houses. In the U.S. chart, Chiron resides in the 6th house and is located at 20º Aries. The 12th house holds Juno at 20º Libra, exactly opposite Chiron. The 12th house represents the outcasts of society, those who feel they don’t or can’t fit in with social norms. Thus, the Juno-Chiron combination describes the psychological wounding that arises through feelings of rejection or isolation.
The added influence of Mars can turn this mental health issue into violent, insane action. The planetary ruler of the 6th house is Mars, which by secondary progression has just turned retrograde in the 12th house at 18º Libra. Under this lethal set-up, any time a major transit or progression enters this 18º to 20º area of the cardinal signs, the potential for a mass shooting takes place.
On the morning of the shooting in Newtown, CT, the U.S. progressed Moon was exactly conjunct the U.S. 12th house Juno (orb: 0º00’). One of Juno’s expressions is “protector of children”, and she was under assault by a square from transiting Mars (at 21º Capricorn) and an opposition from transiting Eris (at 21º Aries). Unfortunately, the potential for such massacres is increasing over the next few years, since the transiting Uranus-Pluto square ignites this deadly configuration.
John McAfee, On the Run
John McAfee made a fortune developing the first commercially available anti-virus software that bears his name, but now he’s wanted for questioning in Belize where he’s lived for the last four years. His neighbor, Gregory Faull, was recently found shot to death, and the suspicion is that McAfee may have killed him as revenge for poisoning his barking dogs.
McAfee was born with his Virgo Sun square Uranus (September 18, 1945; London, UK; time unknown), an eccentric combination often found in millionaire’s charts. Mercury in Virgo is in a tighter square to Uranus, increasing his inventiveness and originality, but also tending toward radical, even shocking opinions. To hear his story**, McAfee is the victim of greedy Belize officials plotting to take his remaining fortune.
McAfee’s Mars in Cancer is central to his defensive, reclusive nature. Naturally protective of property and home, Mars here helped inspire him to protect computers from hackers, in the same way that he has armed bodyguards and many dogs to protect his compound in Belize. Mars in Cancer also cues up his Aquarius Moon, which opposes Pluto, adding to a hyper-vigilant personality wary of invasion of privacy.
On April 30, 2012, McAfee’s worst fears came true when a Belize paramilitary unit raided his home on the suspicion that he was manufacturing designer drugs. He was released and not charged, but at the time, the transiting Uranus-Pluto square was activating his natal Mars. The Uranus-Pluto square was also a factor when his neighbor was killed on November 10, 2012. Transiting Pluto has moved on, but transiting Uranus will continue to harass his Mars over the next three months. He’s escaped to Miami, where’s he’s hiding in plain sight.
