"The natal chart is like a seed and progressions are the unfolding in time of that into the plant it is to become. Transits, are like a daily weather report. In political astrology, these three factors have to be taken into account!"
May 14, 2012 - Same-sex marriage, Venus and the financial markets, and Tom Gabel's transformation
Reader feedback
re: Gwyneth Paltrow - I love Gwyneth Paltrow. You did not mentioned her Mars Pluto conjunction. I am a Scorpion married to a Libran, who has Mars Pluto conjunction at Leo, at midheaven. People, find a place to hide when Mars and Pluto explode beneath the Venus facade. Expect to see Gwyneth at more violent / action movies. Venus is more beautiful when Mars the beast is channelled positively.
A. Thanks for your feedback. I have profiled her several times previously and did discuss her Mars-Pluto-Sun triple conjunction and its dangerous side. I didn't want to repeat themes I've already described since at some point I might put these profiles together. You can read the Mars-Pluto version here: stariq.com/P0001897. And then I wrote another profile about her during her Saturn return, which is here: stariq.com/P0003816. Here's when she announced her engagement to Chris Martin: stariq.com/P0004990. Here's when she signed up to do the first Iron Man film with Robert Downey Jr: stariq.com/P0008710.
re: Boston bombings - I read with interest your profile of the older brother, and hope you will do one for the younger brother. I love your column and find it very insightful.
re: Monsanto - Senator Tester has proposed an amendment that would delete the Monsanto rider.
Concerned readers can call the White House @ (202) 456-1111. Live people actually answer this line. Of course, people can also email the White House and call and email their representatives in the House and Senate.
re: drought - I read your blog regularly religiously as it is informative and educating. I live in heartland and I remember your writing last summer that it will be very difficult and those transits will remain in effect till this late this summer also due to lilith. Would you please be kind enough to refresh this prediction if possible because last year's drought here was extremely unbearable and it was extremely disheartening to farmers. So if time permits would you again enlighten us with your astrological thinking about heat and drought in heartland of America.
re: astro-detective - It would be interesting to see the Travis Alexander natal horoscope and the horoscope for the day he was killed on June 4, 2008.
re: Amanda Knox - I really enjoyed your new page about the Amanda Knox case--excellent work! I do have a question, though--at the very end, you suggest that the hard work for Amanda started when Uranus retrograded right square her Saturn and pr Saturn, but still minutes away. I've often wondered about these spare minutes--Saturn retrograded just minutes before conjuncting my Neptune a few months back (actually, looking at the chart now, it was 1 degree 14 mins...)
My tendency is to say there is no actual effect if there is not actual connection, and well, minutes are still minutes. But it sounds like you feel differently--if so, within how many minutes, or even degrees do you feel a transiting aspect must be to actually create an effect in a retrograde like this? What's your experience with this? The Knox case certainly seems proof.
A. Every case is different, but a natal planet doesn't operate in isolation. Consider the progressed planets, and faster moving transits, like the Sun or Mars, or even the Moon, to carry the connection from the transit to the natal planet. This is known as the "translation of the light" in traditional astrology.
In Amanda's case, transiting Uranus turned retrograde while only 0º03’ from her progressed Saturn. The closeness of that station in itself suggests major life events unfolding. That's pretty much as close to a direct hit as one can get.
re: Zendaya - I always enjoy your weekly column. I'm wondering if a birthtime of about 11:15 AM might be right for Zendaya Coleman? This puts that sensual Moon right on an angle, creates a Fixed Grand Cross, and highlights the existing Kite Grand Earth Trine... Plus Lilith right next to the MC.
A. Hmmm... maybe so. It's an interesting concept that Disney girls have a prominent Lilith. I did a quick check and noticed that Britney Spears has her Sagittarius Sun conjunct Lilith and Annette Funicello has Lilith conjunct her Cancer Ascendant.
Pope Francis - What do you think about his Sun in the 266 zodiac degree and being Pope 266?
Here is the Sabian Symbol: 26º Sagittarius (266): A Flag-Bearer In A Battle. Keyword: Nobility.
A. Marvelous synchronicity! I don't know what it means though....
Global Warming - Hi, I clicked several times on 'Science' but was told that it was in error. I'd like to read the article.
A. I apologize about the broken link. It was to an L.A. Times article explaining the Science article in plain English. Here it is again: climate-warming
re: Pope Francis - I wanted to point out that there are THREE St. Francis's: St. Francis de Sales being the third. HIS life's work also coincides with Francis I's ideas, I think: From Wikipedia: Francis de Sales, (21 August 1567 – 28 December 1622) was a Bishop of Geneva and is honored as a saint in the Roman Catholic Church. He became noted for his deep faith and his gentle approach to the religious divisions in his land resulting from the Protestant Reformation.
Keep up the good work, tho I am really sick and tired of the ongoing power and influence that the forces that hold back our moving forthrightly into the New Age, are still so much in control, as your recent comments said... :-(
re: NeptuneCafe - Just wanted to say that I'm really impressed with this site. I've studied astrology since I was little ( a long time ago) and for the last 6 years or so, intensively, with Noel Tyl.
So I'm sure I've been aware of The Neptune Cafe, but hadn't referenced it. But today, I got interested in Ceres because I noticed it was aspecting Pluto in a horary I set up and so in making a query I ran across your site. Wonderful work! A real resource for anyone wanting to learn Astrology, which I believe is really a soul endeavor. So you're doing God's work !!
re: Pluto in Leo generation - How is the Pluto in Capricorn going to affect the people who have the Uranus Pluto conjunction in Virgo? I saw the article Donna Cunningham did on the Pluto in Leo generation.
re: Reeva Steencamp - So if we knew her birth time, would it be easier to see something definitive, death-wise? You are being clear enough. But golly, these transits touch a lot of people and they don't die. Everyone born the same day as she was, for instance, didn't die when she did. You've talked, in the past, about the nodes being involved when someone dies, too.
A. Her choice to be with Oscar Pistorius creates another perspective of her life, and that's how her planets interact with his. The martial influences are overwhelming, and they exacerbate her own Mars-Juno square.

Last week, during what NewsScope previously referred to as “The Confrontational Lunar Eclipse”, the Obama administration announced that it now believes Assad’s Syrian government has used chemical weapons. Last year Obama said that the use of chemical weapons would be a “red line” that triggers a U.S. response, but the president backed away from immediate intervention until irrefutable evidence is acquired.
Gwyneth Paltrow’s Ageless Beauty
Last week People magazine crowned Gwyneth Paltrow the “World’s Most Beautiful Woman” of 2013. Also last week the cheeky star was promoting Iron Man 3 on the talk shows, and her second cookbook “It’s All Good” debuted at #1 on the New York Times bestseller list. Paltrow’s career declined after she won an Oscar in 1999, but in recent years she’s staged a tremendous comeback.
Syria’s horoscope* (November 13, 1970; 6:08 am; Damascus, Syria) provides an astrological window into this escalating civil war, especially considering the upcoming Solar Eclipse and Uranus-Pluto square. Syria’s polarized chart – the Sun-Venus-Jupiter conjunction in Scorpio opposite the Moon-Saturn conjunction in Taurus – is perfectly in line with the May 9th Solar eclipse. This astro-event often corresponds to a leader’s fall from power, so we shouldn’t be surprised if Assad leaves soon.
Syria’s inherent violent tendencies can be seen in its natal Mars-Uranus conjunction in Libra. In Syria’s chart, the “troublemaker” Eris opposes Uranus, which suggests how small grievances can snowball into major confrontations. Recall that Eris, in her myth, threw a Golden Apple into a
banquet that eventually led to the Trojan War. Next month, the Uranus-Pluto square activates Syria’s Mars-Uranus-Eris axis, which is a highly volatile, explosive combination in an area that already threatens to become a regional conflict.
Meanwhile, transiting Saturn on the U.S. Scorpio Ascendant has brought forth the seriousness of the Syrian situation. But in Obama’s chart, Saturn is conjoining his Neptune, which pushes him for some clarification about the “red line” which last week became a gray line. Saturn demands proof before taking action. The international community remembers all too well the fiasco that followed Bush’s intervention in Iraq based on claims of “weapons of mass destruction.” However, next month’s astro-events suggest that the Syrian civil war is heading toward a critical turning point.
The Top Five Astro-Events for May
1. Ceres activates the Uranus-Pluto square from the 2nd through 9th from the family-oriented sign of Cancer, indicating major developments in parent-child dynamics. Creative changes are favored to get out of ruts in the caretaking department. Talking about financial priorities will be helpful in managing the inevitable crises that turn up. Ceres brings major life passages, like pregnancy, death, and re-birth.
2. The Solar Eclipse on the 9th takes place in Taurus and is conjoined by Mercury, Mars and Pallas. This confluence of planets points to an eventful time, and an energetic new beginning for many, especially concerning economic security issues. Financial fairness or justice will likely be debate topics in Washington; and one might anticipate the passing of a well-known politician.
3. The Uranus-Pluto square on the 20th is the third in a series of seven between these two, and brings the next phase of the radical, transformative changes sweeping across our global village. The economic, ecological, social, military and technological systems that we depend on are pressured to reform or collapse. Those with planets in the 9º to 12º of the cardinal signs will be most directly influenced.
4. The Lunar Eclipse on the 24th takes place in the mental signs, Gemini and Sagittarius, and squares Neptune in Pisces. For many, this may bring a phase of confusion and uncertainty, while for the more mystically inclined, fascinating insights and revelations. This is a good time to take a break from work and routines and become more receptive to dreams, intuition, and the web of life that connects everyone.
5. A triple conjunction involving Mercury, Venus and Jupiter unfolds from the 24th through 29th in versatile Gemini. This combination of planets brings enjoyable social occasions, interesting journeys, and intellectual rapport. Write to loved ones, engage friends and neighbors in gatherings, and if you’re in the market, find a new romantic interest. Think abundance and take a chance on a new adventure.
Ms. Paltrow was born with a regenerative Sun-Pluto conjunction in the partnership sign of Libra (September 27, 1972; 5:25 pm; Los Angeles, CA). Her romances with Brad Pitt and Ben Affleck were characterized by typical Libran indecisiveness, but on December 3, 2003 she married Chris Martin of the rock group Coldplay. At the time, transiting Pluto had reached her Midheaven and was opposing her Saturn in the 4th house, shifting her attention from film-making (10th house) to family-building (4th house).
Over the next few years, as transiting Pluto squared her natal Sun-Pluto, she had two children and suffered from postpartum depression. She also realized that her stressful lifestyle and poor eating habits were making her sick. In a later interview, she explained the classic Libra problem of
unexpressed anger: “I made everyone else’s feelings more important than my own… and then I’d be alone in my car yelling at traffic.”
Paltrow transformed her life by changing her lifestyle: she became an expert on eating natural, organic food. Natally, her Mercury-Ceres conjunction in Libra is a signature for writing (Mercury) about food as a nurturing agent (Ceres). Over the last few months, her progressed Venus at 9º Libra was energized by the Uranus-Pluto square, as she became the world’s most beautiful woman. This coming month, the Uranus-Pluto square activates her Mercury-Ceres, which indicates she’ll have a lot to say about self-renewal through healthy eating habits. And above all, for finding “balance” in one’s life.
April's AstroEvent #5: "The Lunar Eclipse on the 25th ... could bring highly emotional scenes in the personal realm, while the nation reels from heavy rainstorms and flooding."
NBC News, April 28: "From Texas to North Dakota, heavy spring rains continue to trigger flash floods and turn streets into rivers."
