re: astrology rising - Actually, I don't "believe" in Astrology! I tell people: "It is not a Religion. It is not something to 'believe' in." It is simply Plane Geometry -- the study of repetitive geometrical patterns. Particular patterns will repeat themselves, often with the same results. That is where we, Astrologers, get our predictions from.
re: America's plutocracy - I'm struck by the sudden blockbuster best seller "Capital in the 21st Century" by Thomas Piketty. As an exposition of our current economic situation and trending direction, could this book be major force for change?
re: Susan Miller - Interesting to see Susan's chart. I used to work for her, and have met her in person as well a couple of times. Yes, she is one of the hardest working astrologers out there. She told me that she has a keen interest in how words work together, and she had very definite views of how to craft a sentence. For example, she also said to never use 'ing' in a sentence

re: Wal-Mart - Thanks so much for all you do. I especially enjoyed the Wal-Mart story. Wal-Mart is a major contemporary symbol of the US psychic landscape, at least for the common people of the US. I note the perfect conjunction between Wal-Mart's natal Mars and the USA's natal Pluto (and ruling planet). What do you think of that?
A. Yes, that's a major connection. The U.S. Pluto, the nation's ruling planet, describes the power of corporate America, and Wal-Mart is a major manifestation of that, a corporate warrior, if you will.
re: Wal-Mart - Wal-Mart's Saturn is also being eclipsed by the Solar Eclipse on the 28th. And its opposing its Sun as well. I don't think eclipses to Saturn are viewed as beneficial.
re: Colbert - I love Stephen Colbert! In his case, we can see how Saturn rewards hard work. You get what you deserve with Saturn. What he started 14 years ago has reached full flower and will now transition into something new.
re: America's plutocracy - I especially love your last line in the "Rise of America's Plutocracy" post. Yes, that and more. At least a few of us have noticed... It looks like the April 15 "Blood Moon" will be one degree off of both my Sun in Aries, and Moon in Libra. I'm thinking about staying "under the covers," but that doesn't seem to be what your advice is.
re: America's plutocracy - It's turning out more Brave New World than 1984 in some ways... I am constantly shocked by how much pharma my American friends ingest... and it's happening here too in the UK. The only thing that has put the brakes on it is the NHS, and that's not for a good reason, but simply because the government is cheapskate.... Yes -- Pluto is winning the Uranus-Pluto square at the moment...

re: MH370 - Just wanted to share a few comments & questions about the current mystery regarding the missing plane from some fellow astrologers. Like you, we feel that hidden hands set this in motion and that the plane is most likely not in the ocean but landed & hidden for now in another country pending some future action. We have been following the moon in the departure chart to watch the revelations & false starts to current hunt in south Indian sea under the recent Scorpio moon 12th house of that chart then into Sag... high hopes dashed back to square one for the hunt.
So our questions to you... when do you think the world will start searching on land... who do you think will solve this & how long do you feel this could drag on.. lastly we feel not so good about the outcome for the passengers long term... do you agree?
A. The technique of making forecasts about developments in the case based on the transits to the Departure chart is solid. For example, the last communication at 1:30 am happened as the Moon in Gemini reached the Descendant. I suspect transiting Saturn's square to Mercury relates to bad news about the prospects.
re: Grace and Nicole - Sorry to say Wolfstar but you are DEAD WRONG about Nicole Kidman not possessing the “depth of feeling and smoldering sexuality” of Grace Kelly. As a graduate of the performing arts (in acting) with three degrees in both film and theater, it is painfully obvious to me that you have not seen all of Ms. Kidman’s films nor her performances on the stage. If you had, you would never have made such a BLUNDERING STATEMENT!
re: Grace and Nicole - Even though Nicole Kidman does have a Scorpio rising, its her Gemini Sun which I feel more, so I agree she doesn't have that deeper sensual vibe thing going on like Grace did.

re: Marianne Williamson - Since I recently relocated for good in Rīga, being of dual citizenship and in retirement, I had not heard of Ms Williamson's foray into politics! As always, appreciate your nuanced and yet objective way of doing a reading. Having read a lot of New Age authors, possibly starting with numerous writings by Williamson, I'll be anticipating paying attention to summer developments. It's sort of like a grand experiment, to see if self-actualization translates, somewhat literally, into earthly success...and in politics. Also appreciate the tape with the Oprah interview.
It might just have hit the right note with me, as I return to the land of my birth. Only 1/3 of those exiled by WWII have done so, I recently heard on a Latvian current events channel. That's more than I presumed would return. And certainly, not growing up in a Latvian-American community, I hardly thought that I'd be returning. That's why Williamson's own vision, as you've captured it, is of such interest to me. Seems to point to a Providence, you know? Thanks for an illuminating article.

Chiron - I want to thank you for your comments on Jeff Bezos, and Chiron in your January 13th column. My brother was born on November 24, 1963 less than 2 days following JFK's assassination. About 7 days after my brother's 50th birthday, he suddenly and unexpectedly lost his eyesight in both eyes to cataracts. Jeff Bezos and my brother were born seven weeks apart from each other, and both of them had transiting Chiron within one degree of their natal Chirons when they experienced their respective sudden and unexpected health issues! My gratitude for all your fine service.
re: your writing - Your work, your writing seems very Virgo: very clear, very precise. You are also a fine writer, such a rare thing. But you feel that magic and it is there in your work if someone is subtle enough to notice it. Astrology is very lucky to have you: someone with so much integrity, precision, professionalism and someone who transmits that magic, although I suspect that is done unwittingly.

Mars Turns Direct
For nearly the entire month of May, transiting Mars is at 9º Libra. It’s been retrograde since March 1 in the sign of partnership, diplomacy and style, but will turn direct on May 19 and then slowly pick up speed as it moves forward through Libra. Individually, economically, socially, militarily and geopolitically, Mars’s station on the 19th marks an important turning point.

re: Donald Sterling - Your evaluation of Donald Sterling is outstanding. I live here in Southern California and have been glued to the coverage of Sterling and the Clippers since the news broke. Underscoring the generational and cultural impacts of Sterling’s Pluto in Cancer era makes the analysis more meaningful. We can we can “see” Sterling through his own historical lens and thus comprehend the origins of his belief system more readily. Too many astrologers neglect the importance of this.
re: Obama relocated - Your analysis of Obama’s relocated Kiev chart coupled with what an ACG map can and cannot reveal is spot on. You’ve made a clear and convincing case as to why we need to use rely on both techniques for a more accurate assessment. This week’s column is one of your best ever.
For many people, Mars retrograding through Libra has brought back old lovers, or brought back up old issues to re-hash, re-think, and re-frame. One clear example of this has been the essay penned by Monica Lewinski in Vanity Fair where she repeatedly states her regret for her affair with Bill Clinton. Both Lewinski and Clinton have Libra Rising, so Mars retrograding through Libra put their business back onto the national scene.
There are no planets at 9º Libra in the U.S. horoscope, but it hits powerful midpoints. The Mars/Pluto midpoint is at 9º Aries and the Sun/Jupiter midpoint is at 9º Cancer. Mars/Pluto is a decidedly aggressive energy, and its activation (especially by opposition) has historically brought spontaneous spasms of violence and political assassinations. Sun/Jupiter refers to leadership opportunities, and the current station coincides with important political primaries.
In the personal realm, those who are acting with the retrograde flow of Mars have been strategizing, holding back their choices, and weighing their options. As Mars turns direct, the affairs associated with any natal planet at 8º-10º of any sign become highly energized, but especially planets in the cardinal signs (Aries, Cancer, Libra, Capricorn). No more sitting on the fence. This is a good time to increase social activities, reach out and engage others, and resolve issues with a spirit of cooperation.
Rob Ford, the Star of Crazy Town
Rob Ford became an international celebrity for being the foul-mouthed, bad-boy mayor of Toronto. After he admitted to smoking crack last November, he was relieved of most of his duties but continued to make the talk show circuit while spiraling deeper into the dark side. A reporter for the Toronto Star penned his sordid tale in the recently released biography “Crazy Town”.
Rob Ford was born with his Gemini Sun conjunct Mercury retrograde (May 28, 1969; Etobicoke, Canada; time unknown), a restless combination that tends to seek out conflict and trouble due to its opposition to a retrograde Mars. Ford’s Mars is said to be “out-of-bounds”: its declination at 24º south of the ecliptic puts it outside the normal range of planets’ orbits, and consequently, outside of socially acceptable behavior.
Ford initially became a cult celebrity for his criticism of spending and his passionate arguments, a reputation which is in line with his Gemini Sun opposite Mars. He grew in popularity as the one councilor who actually responded to his constituents’ phone calls. His concern and populism can be seen in his Sun’s trine to Ceres in Aquarius. But his personal appetites for extreme experiences (shown by his Venus in a Yod formation with Neptune and Pluto) eventually brought him down.
Ford’s mental well-being is certainly an issue now as his progressed Mercury is conjunct his natal Black Moon Lilith. This combination takes place at 8º Cancer and becomes a health issue by its square to natal Chiron. Challenging Mercury-Lilith combinations can unravel rationality, as an innate curiosity seeks mental experiences that are beyond the visible edges. Now, as transiting Mars is squaring his progressed Mercury-Lilith conjunction, he’s entered re-hab for substance abuse. But he probably won’t stay.…
George Clooney Changes his Mind
For confirmed bachelor and A-list actor George Clooney, Mars retrograding through Libra offered him the opportunity to change his mind about his long-standing opposition to getting married. On April 22, he got engaged to Lebanese lawyer Amal Alamuddin. They met last September at a charity event and are planning on a small ceremony (only 200 close friends) on the one-year anniversary of their first meeting.
At first blush, George Clooney’s traditional Taurus Sun and Moon-Saturn conjunction in Capricorn (May 6, 1961; 2:58 am; Lexington, KY) suggest that he would naturally favor being married. Also, Neptune is the ruler of his chart, and forms a harmonious trine to Juno, the marriage asteroid, which is located right on his Ascendant. On the other hand, a Sun-Uranus square denotes a strong independent streak, which makes Juno’s opposition to Pluto too smothering.
Notice that Clooney’s Juno and Neptune are located at 9º of their respective signs. That puts them on target for Mars’s station at 9º Libra. Clooney clearly felt this coming a month ahead of the actual station: he proposed to her as transiting Mars was in his 7th house of partners and exactly opposite his Venus. Also transiting Saturn was activating his Sun-Uranus square, essentially taming his wild streak.
When we progress Clooney’s chart, we can see the true motivation for his marriage proposal: progressed Ceres is now at 9º Taurus where it links up to his Juno and Neptune, and becomes activated by transiting Mars. Progressed Ceres favorably aspecting Juno signals a clear intention of getting married to have children. This message is underscored by the fact that transiting Jupiter is going through his 5th house of children.
